.45 Colt 'non' choke barrel?
« on: March 15, 2010, 07:07:41 PM »
So who is shooting a Contender with the .45 Colt and JUST the .45 Colt with no 'shot/choke' device? Just read one of my OLD Handloader/Rifle magazines comparing the 45 Win Mag and the .45 Colt. Seems one does not give way to the other in any way if you are careful to not use old balloon head cases in the .45 Colt.
Are barrels offered in Colt that don't have the screw in/on chokes?

I have a 12 inch 45 DColt barrel without the choke.  It is an old timer with the soldered on front sight, and is a full bull.  I have never shot anything hotter than cowboy loads, so I can't help you with what you are looking for, but at these mild levels it is a good shooter and a lot of fun.

I have an old Van Horn carbine bbl in 45 Colt, and my buddy has a factory octagon bbl in 45 Colt (both Colt only). You can use the "Ruger and T/C" loads, which are actually pretty impressive. I don't think T/C has made a straight 45 Colt bbl in years. You can find them used on the forums (I did) if you shop around. They do come up from time to time. Also, most any of the custom barrel makers can make you one in just about any length or configuration you can think of.

I very much doubt you will EVER encounter any "balloon head" cases, unless you are a cartridge collector and scour the gun shows and internet classifieds looking for them. I know they always put that caveat in their articles to cover their butts, but it is a non-issue.

I've been loading 45 Colts for 20+ years. One of the greatest attributes to the cartridge is it's flexibility (with modern high pressure guns). I can load under the original cowboy pressure loads, "standard" cowboy loads, all the way up to 300 to 335 gr bullets to 1300+ fps. I have a modern Colt Anaconda in 45 Colt, a current production Winchester 92 in 45 Colt also. These will take the high pressure loads as well as the Contender and Encore.

You have to always be aware of what gun you're loading for, I do have some old cowboy guns that would turn into hand grenades if I shot a modern high pressure load out of them (Single Action Armies). I only load certain bullets into certain loads, so at a glance, I can tell if the round is a "cowboy" load, or a high pressure load. There's a big difference in appearance between a 250 gr round nose flat point, and a 300 to 335 gr wide flat nose bullet. All of my Colt loads are separated in clearly labeled boxes so there's no chance for errors.

I've been shooting a factory 10inch bull barrel for some time. Just recently had a set of grips made for it to resemble the profile of the Colt Bisley. My shooting is based around a 255gr lead bullet over some WW231 powder. It's the same load I settled on for my 45Colt Blackhawk and my S&W Model 25-5

That's a very nice set of stocks!  Do you mind if I ask where you got them?  Feel free to PM if appropriate.

I'm on the fence as far as a .45 Colt barrel.  I've got equal numbers of .45 and .44 revolvers, and am thinking about getting a barrel in one or the other for my Contender.  I should probably stick with the .45, but they're so close it's perplexing.

Sam the gentleman who made those stocks lives in Ark. and goes by the handle Otter. He made a number of different and beautiful stocks for the Contenders and Encores, but sadly :-[ he's quite doing gunstocks and now is concentrating on insturment repairs. Here's a photo of a set he did for himself for an 8 inch 45-70.

My favorite 45colt 'hot' load is a 300grain JHP pushed by 19.5 of 2400. That is about all the 2400 that will fit. Great load, big blast, and accurate. The choke in the picture has been bored out and reblued, it no longer chokes. The barrel itself is not bored for 410, It is a 'hot shot' barrel. Before I had it bored out I left the choke off. Straight 45colt barrels are a little hard to find. Talk to ED.

I color code all my 45colt loads. All my brass cases are loaded mild, all the nickle cases are hot. I do this with other calibers as well. All my 357s are nickle, all the 38s are brass. I do this with 44mag also.

Those are some very pretty contenders.
