Competition Rifle Shooting Glove?
« on: February 27, 2010, 02:31:34 PM »
I plan on taking part in a "Battle Rifle" shoot this summer at the local Gun Club. An assortment of military rifles will be used by myself such as an M1A, M4 and a stock Model 96 Swedish Mauser. I have shot small bore rifle competition as a kid and am familiar with the various shooting positions. The guy running this match recommends the use of a shooing glove. I have never used one and am wondering how effective they are and what they accomplish. The course of fire is 300 yard paper silhouette targets from offhand, sitting, kneeling and prone positions.

Does the guy running the match also sell the gloves?  Larry

I've seen position rifle shooters using thick gloves like weight lifters use or that a handgunner would use for heavy recoil guns but I've never done it personally. I use the same type thin gloves I use for skeet, trap or sporting clays when rifle shooting. Just something to stop your hands from being slick when wet with sweat in summer or to keep the cold metal off your hands in cold weather.

A competition glove is thickly padded, but has no fingers or thumb.  Its purposes are to isolate your pulse and to pad your hand and wrist from the pressure of the sling.  Check this out:

Creedmoor Sports has a good selection of rifle competition gear including shooting gloves.  The Creedmoor glove I use works well.  You will also need sling.  The low cost cotten web slings work well.  It sounds like you will be shooting the Infantry Trophy Match.  The links below may be helpful
