New 204 ruger barrel
« on: March 01, 2010, 02:56:56 AM »
Hi new here
I just bought a brand new 204 ruger 26 inch barrel direct from fox ridge. I proceeded to clean
this barrel and can't get this thing clean, the more i clean it the worse it gets. I tried hoppies
montana extreme products, JB bore paste, Kroil oil, you can't believe how much time i have
cleaning this barrel. I called T/C and they said just shoot it out. I just can't bring myself to do
that. I keep letting it soak in different cleaners and montana extreme bore conditioner.
what do they put in there.  Thanks Sup.

What are you trying to accomplish ? Have you shot it yet. Its brand new. Run a couple of patches thru the thing to get out any machining and shoot it.

Can you describe the things about the barrel that make you think it's not clean?  Is it not shiny inside?  Does something come out on the cleaning patches and if so of what color?

I have never had patches come out perfectly clean fron a rifle barrel that has been shot.  Solvents, brushing, more solvents, JB Bore paste, patches still come out stained a little.

Well, I routinely clean barrels so well the patches come out clean.  I also run a few patches through new barrels.  Generally they come out clean after less than 10 patches.  By clean, I mean the only thing discoloring them is the solvent used in the cleaning.

What kind of jag or brush are you using?  If you're using a bronze brush, then the discoloring (blue or green) you see is coming from the brush and not the bore.

Remove all traces of oil with a solvent and a couple dry parches and shoot it.

One thing that I find is that some of the dry patches leave a lot of what I call lent I cleaned my Muzzleloader the other day was nice and shiney ran a patch with oil on it and when i looked it look like it had never been cleaned.
