Ain't Caught a Single Possum
« on: November 18, 2003, 01:22:59 PM »
:)  I think it's funny. Last year I hated catching possums. This year I have actually been wanting to catch a few, so I could try my hand at putting up possum pelts. I have even made a few sets for strictly possum, and haven't caught a single one. Most people would be happy to have my luck, but I WANT A POSSUM! :-D

Ky  you have to use a chunk of black top to throw in yr dirt hole and you will have doubles  in one trap  :-D .   Usually any type of stinky bait or make yr best canine set and possum will show up and commit  suicide by throwing himself into yr trap.......

BEST WAY TO CATCH POSSUM!!

RdFx is right.  Take 15 minutes and make the best canine dirt hole you have ever made.  Or take 5 minutes and make a good dirthole for coyote and like Red said:  The possum will commit suicide. :)  Dadblasted things are notorious for messing up a good canine set
For Sale: Old wore out trapper - rode hard, put up wet, high milage and earned every mile.

I like the blacktop chunk for bait tip, myself. Try making a nice canine set next to a nice stretch of blacktop, too. It appears to be their preferred habitat.

I can certainly hold my own in non-target possum catches at canine sets. Also, the first season I tried a bunch of dog proof coon traps (like Duffer's DP, Coon Cuffs, etc.) I had nearly 100% possum catch rate in tripped sets. Didn't get a coon until the final day of the season, but up to that point I was hammering the possums. It was true insult to injury for me given what I had spent on Dog Proof traps and thinking this was a way to limit my possum catches, too. Even had some pull up on the end of drowners with the darn things because the water level dropped and the possums were working my now "dry" water/coon sets guarded with those traps.
Yep, best way to catch them is to not try so hard and focus on other species about as hard as you possibly can.

Wacky: It's a little of both. Most people catch a gob of possums and don't want to. They want to know how to keep from catching possums. Well my advice is target possums and get coons. :)

But I have been wanting to catch a possum to try my hand at putting them up.

I just made a good dirthole set next to a cornfield. I used three different lures and fish for bait, because the coon are tearing the corn up. I'll probably have a grinner staring at me in the morning. :)
