Barrel dates vs. receiver dates
« on: March 22, 2010, 03:11:53 PM »
New here. Just traded for an NEF with 44 Mag and 20 ga. barrels. The numbers both barrels match the last three of the receiver numbers, so I assume these were fitted at H&R. My question is, according to the FAQ here, my receiver, with a prefix of "NM", was built in 1998. The 44 Mag barrel is the newer extractor only configuration. The 20 ga. is in the ejector config. From what I've been reading here, this changeover from ejector to extractor seems to have happened around 2004 - 2005. Is this correct? Is there anyway to tell when the barrel was made/fitted. The only other marking I see on the barrel lug is a stamped "P". The 3 digit matching numbers appear to have been scribed in with a vibrating scribe of some sort.

Cool website, guys. And gals.

That's the normal way Gardner marked the underlugs for decades. If the frame is an SB1, and the 20ga was the original barrel, then the 44mag barrel was fitted since 2008, check the FAQs, you can determine if it's an SB1 shotgun or SB2 rifle frame. I think the first 44mag extractors were later than 2005, but I don't know for sure. Roll stamps on the barrel mean nothing, the P is common, FWIW. If the 44mag isn't drilled and tapped for sights, it's a 2009 or later barrel, if it slugs over .430" in the groove, it's a pre 2007 barrel.

In the FAQs you will also find pics of the extrator and ejector. It may be a previous owner 'modified' the eject. to exract. only.

After more reading here it appears that the 44 barrel is the "second generation" extractor configuration. Must be fairly new.
