Legale barrel length

I live in FL. can anybody tell me the legal length a rifle barrel has to be? Would 16 1/4" be to short?

minimum 16" barrel, minimum 26" overall firearm length.

To the best of my knowledge it's 16 inches.  I have one at 16.5, and I wouldn't go below that to make sure it's legal and have a little spare barrel for a re=crown if ya needed it.

Thanks for the quick reply's, I have a 26" 280 barrel up for trade or sale someone wants to make a trade and wondering but I think it's going to be to short for my likes.

Quick is correct, altho I've heard of rifles with barrels as short as 16.1 inches in length.  Of course most cautious folks or manufacturers will go with 16 1/4 or 16 1/2inches.

Also some trivia, is that a smoothbore .22 LR for shooting ratshot must have a minimum 18inch barrel, or the ATF will go ape-poop over that!  As that smooth-bore allows them to define that particular rimfire model as a "shotgun,"  which GCA'34 (gun control act of 1934) says a shotgun barrel must be 18inches or longer.

I don't remember if the particular .22 rifle I saw last year was an old Marlin or Mossberg, but it was used for shooting small aerial targets at "close" range.

And FWIW, the measurement is made muzzle to firing pin, not just the length of barrel after the chamber.

It is legal to own the rifles that just came a bit short like the M-1 carbine.Canada loves to turn you back at the border with that one

M1 carbine is fine is the U.S.  Canada is a different animal.
