older shotgun question?
« on: March 24, 2010, 06:08:29 PM »
Found a model 158 .410 shotgun, in good condition also came across a model 088 20 ga which has the most unbelievable case hardening that I have ever seen. Problem is the action seems to be a little loose when open (can wiggle side to side slightly) but tightens up when closed, is this ok or should I pass on this one and keep the 158 .410? I can have the two for 190.00......

You need a good lockup when closed, thats where you shoot from. My guess is the forearm spacer isnt applying much pressure to the front of the action so its loose when open. You can make a shim to glue in between the spacer and the wood for a permanent fix. To 'feel it out' drop the forearm and put a strip of duct tape across the contact area, one strip at a time until you get a firm fit, then you have an idea how much shim you need.

I use aluminum furnace tape, it's permanent, weatherproof and multiple pieces will make a custom shim, trimmed it doesn't show, this is discussed in the FAQs under forend fit.  ;)
