Which hornet for yotes?
« on: March 25, 2010, 06:48:26 PM »
  Which is better for yotes;

1) 35 gr V-max @ 3,000 fps
           or
2) 45gr V-max @ 2550

    What is your favorite load for yotes?

I would say which ever one is the most accurate in your gun. I've not had good luck with the 35 stubby. Is there a 45 V-max? The 40 has shot good for me at times.
Should work at resonable distance. I would go with the heavier bullet.

Thanks BV;
  I stand corrected, that's a 45 gr soft point.

The Hornet is a nice round. I think for yotes it would be OK for 100yds. if you can put it where you want it. I've had good results from the 36 Varmint Grenade but in 223. Haven't did much with it in Hornet as it's too long in my Rugers. It might be nice in a Handi if I ever get a barrel to try. I don't think those 45 sps shot that good, very far in my guns.
I interrupted the yotes dinner in my Avatar. He was holding the rabbit in his mouth at the shot ;D Ten at night, moonlight at 100yds. DRT  Priceless ;)

Back in the old days I shot some with my Hornets using the Winchester 46 gr OPE.  Did the job just fine.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I would go with the heaver bullets. You will need all of the penatration you can get with the Hornet, but a well placed shot will kill them.

I have a friend who used both the 35 vmax and the standard 45 grain SP on called coyotes in AZ. He said he has had much faster kills with the 35 grain vmax.

 ;) the couple I shot with the Hornet were both taken with a 45 grain Hornady and 4227 powder...I was hunting other game at the time, and just happened onthe coyotes...I am very fond of the Hornet, but usually pick a more powerful rifle for coyotes as most of the shots are well over 100 yards...for called animals, it would be fine with a cool shooter...

  I have a couple .223s (NEF & Savage 11G), but I also have a couple Hornets also (an NEF and a Savage #219L single shot)  and I don't like to neglect any of my rifles. :D I really think the 35gr V-max may work well for woodchucks also. Actually any V-max would probably work well.
