Help with Canines
« on: November 14, 2003, 03:06:05 PM »
I plan on setting some footholds and some snares this weekend at my dad's house. My parents are divorced and he lives in the next county. I go over there some, but just on weekends. I am going to set some traps for canies, but they will have to be pulled Sunday morning as I will be coming back home.

My question is will it be worth it? I have always heard alot of the time it takes a few days usually for a canine set to connect. Very rarely do they catch one the first night is what my buddy always told me.

The way I see it, if I'm on location and a canine walks by my set, and my set is a good set it should connect if the canine works it. Am I right?

Thanks,
Zach :?

KY, I can't see that it will hurt.  Now, I'll point out this that if you go inthere and make sets then pull them in a day or two make certain that you remove your lure and bait also.  Some of the old western trappers picked up lure sticks etc so not to loose the curiosity factor.  Snares are good hang em in very trail...just before you leave close the loops and get them off the trail...next visit run out and re-position them.  I've set lines and on the way out had coyotes in snares and blind sets that were in the ground for only 3 hours and that was mid day.  Another way to speed things up may be to use audible baits.  Go get em! :wink:

Zach;
  GO GET EM!
   Every hour spent out on the trapline is a blessing.  30, 40, years from now you will think back and have some good memories and be glad you did.

That plan was shot down by heavy rains, so I didn't even go to my dad's. I decided to wait till next weekend. However, I did pick up a nice male coyote and a small female coon. I normally would release a coon this small but it was caught in a drowning set, therefore it was dead and I went ahead and skinned it. It was 22 inches in length I think.

The coyote was taken in the same spot as the black one. It was a nicely furred male.

Happy Trapping,
Zach Ellis :D
