Do we have a one party system of Govt. ?
« on: March 18, 2010, 02:09:35 AM »
It looks to me we have a right wing branch and a left wing branch of the same party. Yea we have dumb-o-crats and re-public-can'ts but they act like the extream ends of the same thing . Third partys have little or no chance why ?
Anyone else feel this way ?

Well, I guess there are several flavors of conservatives and of liberals and sometimes they get mixed a bit.  But for the most part, liberals (Dumbycrats) are much more in favor of guvmint solutions to everything and tend to be less sympathetic to bidness.  They also seem to love taxes and fees.  Maybe what galls me the most about them is that they always think they are smarter and know what is best for us all.

Republicans should all be conservative, but we know that there are some rats in the woodpile.  Anyway, any good Republican should be primarily interested in fiscal responsibility, liberty, personal responsibility, states rights and only as a last resort, intervening in peoples personal foibles.  Of course this is a gross simplification, but you know what I mean.

I don't think third parties are normally a good thing, because they tend to get in the way of settling just where the country is on the big issues that are often the subject of political controversy.  In countries where there are significant multiple political parties, they have a heck of a time ever reaching a consensus and getting anything done.  Getting nothing done can sometimes be the best thing, but there really are some things that have to get done and it's best to to have a majority and not just a plurality deciding the big things.  As in sports (football, baseball, etc.), you have two teams competing, not three, four, or five in any given game.

No, Shootall, I don't mean to say that there is only room for two ideas and I don't in any way believe that we should have only a two party system.  The fact is that we have dozens of politcal parties, but you know as well as I do that most of the time, third parties don't hold much sway and when they do, at best, they are nothing more than a spoiler.  We had to suffer through the Clinton crap, because of a spoiler.

Ross Perot caused Blll Clinton to be elected without a majority both times.  I still say America is like a big ship going into port.  The little tug boats have to keep tugging it the right way to get it into dock.  I know people don't like to keep voting for the lesses or two evils, but you have to vote for someone closer to your views to keep tugging the ship the right way.  Right now it is going too far left.  Eventually a good conservative will come along that can win.  Bill Clinton even gave Obama advice, to "govern from the middle".  Obviously Obama hasn't listened.  Hopefully the country can survive this and move hard right this next time, but someone needs to step up and lead.

We always seem to come back to the lesser of two evils argument. We keep looking for some conservative to rise above the mess in Washington and lead us to the ideal country. Then we limit our search for such a person by looking only in the gop. When someone says "the lesser of two evils" they are saying both parties are evil. Kind of like "you want to drink a full bottle of bourbon or scotch", either will leave you wallowing in the dirt and puke.
I don't think a third party getting in the fracus is what we need to fix things. I think we need to use something like the tea party movement to CHANGE one or the other party into what we want. I suppose my ideal government is a Republic with a democrat controlled House, a republican controlled Senate, an independent (not a party) President, and Supreme Court that makes rulings based on the Constitution and not precedent or ideology. If anybody knows how we can get there without some sort of third party movement please tell me.

Reagan had great ideas, but he had a Democrat house and senate.  Hard for him to get what he wanted.  He wanted less government and more private initiatives.  He did get the 401(k) plan in place, tax cuts, and military increased spending which caused the downfall of the Soviet Union.  Liberals like to say that he increased the debt with deficit spending.  However, the economy improved faster than the debt, so that is not as bad.  Now Obama is increasing the debt faster than the economy and when he reaches 20 trillion debt, we could go bankrupt.  Then there will be no health care, welfare, or even military.

So who isn't the lesser of two evils?  And from whose perspective are we selecting this ideal candidate?

I've come to understand that in the real world, no one is perfect and any prospective politician has to go through the process...unless of course you are the chosen one; in which case you pretty much get a pass from the mass media and have an Acorn in your back pocket.

So let's not consider a third party or a change to one of the two parties. We can continue to sit back while the republican leaders nominate all the John McCain's in the world. Then we expect to get them elected? It is all about party loyalty and it is all wrong. Both parties have been taken over by progressive evils. That is your lesser of two evils argument.

I've done alot of thinking on this subject and think I've worked out what would work better than the one party system we have now. All people who believe in anything but the Constitution can be in the Republicrat party. That would leave the rest of us who do believe in our blessed Constitution to run our country as it should be run. Which would take us back to being a one party country but at least it would be the right party, The People! Steve

the period that he lost the congress due to congressional elections..i think we were in a barber shop..
his comment.. the people in this country ain t never gonna learn..im thinking its probably true..
one thing conservatives have to finally learn..you can t ever be done with it.. the liberals will never quit until they run outa town ,or achieve total power ..in this country..
conservatives ,who want to hold on to the ideals our founding fathers promoted..tend to want to sleep it ..to much of the time.. jmo slim

It's a one party system already, since both political party's pander to special interest groups and multi-national corporation monies.  Money rules the roost and all the politicians are at the trough.  The will of the people seems to be always forgotten in the long run.

Reagan never had a complete Republican congress.  He did loose some Republican seats in his second year mid-term elections, but it was because he was standing firm on his tax cuts and conservative issues.  He did have to give in on some dem spending to get his tax cuts, which in turn stimulated the economy.  He never could get the dems to stop spending, he slowed it down.  He did get his military spending which caused the Soviet Union to bankrupt itself trying to keep up with us.

Dixie Dude, Reagan sure did get the democraps to stop spending.  When he signed the defense bill in 1980 I believe, the democraps put a rider in that if discharged military people were offered to reenlist, this was just like a 9 to 5 job and the discharged military person couldn't get unemployment.  I know because in August 1981, I got out and was refused unemployment while looking for a job!
