'CR-.22' Carbine
« on: March 07, 2010, 05:36:43 AM »
I thought I wanted a CR-.45, but the old wisdom,'what people think they want and what they really want aint neccessarily the same thing', got me.
Through these forums I was able to dress my .22WMR UV c/w an old 3/4" Weaver B-6 scope in CR wood and recently fitted up a swap-barrel .22Sportster c/w open sights.
It has the 'look' and is ready to go at a moments notice whether or not I got to reloading. For just plain LOF (Lots of Fun) it is a daisey!
IMHO the factory is really missing the boat in not offering this configuration in the many RF and pistol class CF cartridges. (yeah, Im a traditionalist)

Im a bit of a ludite yet......but we all know what the CR-45 looks like, just think of it in .22LR and youve got it. Then picture you with one having FUN, and you have me.

Im a bit of a ludite yet.

Hey, what goes on between two consenting adults is nobody else's business. LOL!!
I had thought of buying another CR-.45 Colt just for the receiver and stock so I could use it for a 22" 45/70 barrel, but they make a nice starting point no matter what barrel you put on it.

Ive been playing with this by using up some odd lots of left over .22LR, all cheap stuff. It is the coarse front blade and open rear with my old eyes. It is hitting as well as anything else I have with open sights.
I walked over to the neighbors field which has an exposed sandy streach at about 175yd. out and with about 2/3 front blade held high it was scaring the spots I shot at.
All in all I would recommend the .22 LR Sportster as a shooter and with mine set up as is its good looking too.

Had a chance to try some other loads yesterday. CB-shorts shot POA at 15-25ish yds. so the ground squirrels better hide.
Aguila SSS (60gr) were good there too. These often start to wander around 50, I imagine from inadequate twist for the length/weight, but in this rifle they were thwacking every spot I aimed at. Scoped it might not be as good, though with open sights I could see large varmints would be in danger.
This little rifle is working with everything I put in it.
