.270 with muzzle brake
« on: March 29, 2010, 03:35:54 PM »
I stopped by my local gun shop on Saturday - Tanners' in Jamison PA to see what's new in the shop. After looking at all the handguns I spy a multi colored laminate stocked Handi in the rack. I ask to see it and low and behold it's a .270 with a muzzle brake! 21.5" barrel with a professionally added 2.5" brake. Whomever did the work, did a great job. You can barely see the difference in bluing between the pieces. 8 lines of 5 holes equally spaced around the barrel. Besides a lot of dust and cobwebs, it was a clean gun. It came home with me for $175!

I can't wait to get to the range to see how it shoots! :)

sounds like a good deal to me! I wonder how much them brakes help. I am not likeing the recoil my 270 is belting me with and was considering getting a mercury tube.

They pack a good punch to the shooter no question. Only notice it at the range though, out hunting the clothing is heavy enough to absorb all of the recoil. I did fill a plastic baggy with lead shot and stuffed it tight into the buttstock. probably added 1 pound to the weight of the rifle which i would guess at about 9 pounds including scope. the extra weight made a noticable improvement for my .270

As everyone else said, it's an excellent buy, Spanky made an especially good point.

I have 270 and 30-06 Ultracomps now and have had another 270 UC barrel that I sold to Doug, they're all excellent shooters, congrats again on a fantastic find!!  ;)

Just don't shoot it without hearing protection, or you'll be needing a hearing aid way too soon!!  :-X

Several members here remove the brake when hunting for that very reason, not the best alternative to wearing "ears", but an option, there's a source for a thread cover in the FAQs to use when the brake is removed, I use one at the range when I have to shoot in regular shooting stations, the range doesn't allow brakes to be used except in special partitioned shooting stations due to the muzzle blast directed back and to the side from brakes.

They've been selling center fire single shot rifles for the under 13 y.o. crowd again.  Must have been.  Why else would they put a MB on an over-7-pound 270?

My Win Model 270 Classic Featherweight is a mild recoiling beauty at under 6.75 pounds without scope.  Now I do wear a pad at the range if I intend to shoot over 20 rounds through it at one session since I do not get to "trade punches" with the stock.  But the days of "wringing out accuracy" are pretty well behind me provided I do not change components.  Shots at game though are not felt at all.

I love my 270 ultra comp barrel.   I've put 3 or 4 different brand of 130gr bullets through it and each time, 1" groups or less!
Kicks like my 243 on lite-loads too!   You got a great deal - paid $140 for just the barrel...

Enjoy!!   ;D
