Dark Bore Success!
« on: April 01, 2010, 06:51:31 PM »
Birchwood Casey blue and rust remover Worked wonders
on an old very dark bore S.M.L.E...
Took a .410 bore swap(mop) and saturated it.
worked it through the bore several times and let it sit for
about 5 minutes. worked it through several more times
and then passed a bronze brush through about a dozen times.
Ran several patches through and the bore looks pretty dang good now!

If you clean the bore till you get nothing out, try electro cleaning, all sorts of nasty brown stuff will boil out see (surpluserifle) sight Left hand menu they have the particulars on electro cleaning if your interested.

S.S.:  after you have gotten the bore clean with conventional cleaners, try swabbing the bore with Windex with Ammonia and let it sit for a minute or two - the bore should then look like a sewer pipe; go at it with a bristle brush and then some Hoppes and you should be in good shape.

Man I have tried everything on this bore with no success.
several things that even a chemist would have trouble naming
but it still stayed dark. Now that I have it nice and shiney
it should be no trouble to maintain.
