35 remington load needed!
« on: November 10, 2003, 09:16:17 AM »
I have recently aquired a 35 rem barrel, it is a super 14" with a muzzle tamer. I am looking for a good deer sized load that is a good compromise of power and accuracy. I thought I would ask you guys before I started trial and erroring! Also I was told this is a good barrel for a 357max round also, but I am skeptical of shooting this round from it because of the distance to the riflings.....Any thoughts on that also.
Thanx

don't think I would fire a .357 Max from a .35 Rem chamber ..under any circumstance..unless it was the only cartridge I had on my person and a large critter was fixing to et me!  Ones a bottle neck cartridge and the other is a straight wall..the Max is going to be slightly larger in diameter than the bullet and the .35 Rem is going to be much larger around the diameter of the case!

180 gr hornady pistol bullet
41gr 748
magnum primers
9/16" at 100 yds all day long.

 4+ @ 100
 0   @ 150
-4   @ 200

I have a piece of paper with the load data and ballistic data taped to the scope so I never lose it.  The .35 is one of my very favorite bbls :D

Hope this helps!
Thanks!
Bob

I like the 180 gr. Speer flat point over about 39 grains of H-322.  You may be able to work up carefully a grain or three depending on your barrel.  This is an accurate load in my Super 14 and is very deadly on deer.

I have 2 favorite .35 Rem. loads.  #1. 39.5 grains IMR4064 pushing a Speer 180 gr. FP, CCI Primers.  This load in very accurate in my Marlin but is quite toasty.  #2. 35.5 grains IMR3031 and a 200 grain RN is the most accurate in my Contender barrel to date.   A miilder load that I've used with 2 different bullet brands and got the same accuracy.   I started with Sierra 200 RN's and now use Remington 200 RN.

Be careful with the H322.  There are different loads out there in different books.  My Lee book maxs out at 35gr.   Others went over 40gr.  I had good results using this powder at 35gr with 180gr Hornady SSP.   I tested both large rifle and magnum primers with this load and think that it was a little more accurate with the magnum primers.

The load I have been using for deer is 44gr. of H380 with 180gr Hornady SSP and CCI large rifle primers.  It is more accurate than I can shoot (most loads are- He He Ha Ha).  I took one deer with that load this year and he ran 25yds and dropped. The wound channel was excellent.  This load averages around 1936fps in my 14" Contender.

I will repeat what others have said.  These loads are for MY barrel.  Yours may differ.  Work up carefully.

H322 and Hornady 180 SSP have taken many deer and antelope from my 16" T/C.

The problem I had with new cases was missfires  due to excess headspace. The solution was to expand the neck to .375 and then neck down to 35 leaving a shoulder that makes a snug fit when the gun is closed.

Possum is right on the spread of loads listed with H322 so work up loads for your gun and check with a chronograph.  High velocities means high pressure.
