Help dating a Savage 99 in .308 Winchester?
« on: September 14, 2010, 12:39:42 PM »
Howdy folks,

After a bunch of research on the best gun to swap between Oklahoma deer and hog hunting, the Savage 99 in .308 seemed like the answer to my problem.  I bought one on gunbroker, and I've gotta say, it's the best rifle EVER!

I'm wanting to date this rifle.  I've scoured the forums, and I've found lots of great information, but none which would lead me to the manufacture date of my rifle.

Here's the info:

1.  Serial 985XXX, Savage 99 in .308 Winchester

2.  Hand checkered

3.  Brass Rotary Counter and brass cartridge feeder

4.  Safety is aft of the trigger, not a tang safety

5.  Barrel states that the rifle is manufactured in Chicopee Falls

6. NO LEVER BOSS CODE THAT I CAN SEE!

Some of these features seem contrary to what I've seen.  Is it possible that its a re-barrel?

Thanks for your help, folks!

 Well; I'll do it.
Seeing as how you are brand new and thinking you might not have gotten far enough into this site? Scroll down several more subjects and you will see the section for Savage Rifles. In there you will find a sticky that will (should)(might)answer all your questions.
