45-70/Handi's/Barnes Load Data
« on: April 29, 2010, 02:24:36 AM »
Well,

I am going to get a 45-70 handi here in a day or so, my question is this : Has anyone tried the new Barnes Load Data for their 45-70 in regards to the 400 grain loads out to 2186 fps?  I have read that Barnes in the past has posted wrong data.

GLR,  no I haven't tried their data, but like any data, its advisable to start lower, and work your way up.

I know, I'm just curious such as to the correct powder and such.  I see they are using AA1680.

Email barnes. They are very good at getting back to you.

Barnes' data is on their website, no need to email them, although Billy is correct on their communication, Ty Herring is an excellent resource.

I've shot the 300gr TSX-FB using the H4198 Ruger data in my SS Ultra Hunter.

Tim,

I see your nice group with the Barnes 300 grainers is 1 grain above min.  Did you work up to max.?  Curious how those bullets shot at max. velocity.  The 300 grain jacketed 45 70 bullets i have tried only group well with H4198 at charges in the 51 to 52 grn. range.

My loads were .002" off the lands at 2.768", 55gr was the top load I used, 54, and 55gr all looked about the same as 54.5gr, velocity didn't increase all that much.

Tim,

.002 or .020 off the lands?  1 grain gave 25 FPS increase not really noticeable except maybe to your shoulder. :D

.002" as I stated, their recommended COL for the data is 2.770", but I was touching the lands at that COL, so mine my loads are just off the lands at 2.768".

10-4 Tim, just wanted to make sure.  I have been measuring a lot of 45/70 bullets, both jacketed and cast, the ones I have seem to have a fair amount of variation.  Enough difference to make me set back .025 minimum.  I haven't loaded or measured any of the Barnes offerings in this caliber which is why I asked.

I use a Stoney Point(now Hornady) comparator to make sure all loads were the same COL.  ;)
