My New Toy (Ruger Mk 1)
« on: February 14, 2010, 12:48:32 PM »
Picked this one up yesterday.  I have had my eye out for a .22 auto for a while and had contemplated buying a new 22/45, but ran across this one used and it called to me.  From just pictures I never figured I'd like the grip of the these compared to the 22/45, but when I picked it up it felt very good in the hand.  Serial # says this one was made in 1971.

Has a bit (ok, more than a bit :)) of wear on the bluing, but the bore is like a mirror and the magazine is brand new (they included it in a sealed package as the shop said when the gun was originally sold to them it was missing the magazine so they just threw in a new one with it.

Haven't formally grouped it yet, but I took it out back for some plinking and was hitting a soda can pretty good - function was fine for the 3 magazine's worth of ammo I put through it.

I might have overpaid just a tad (got it for $215), but for some reason I just liked it :).

I'd give that in a heartbeat, my last one was $195 and I thought that was a steal, best part it was  FTF and came with a holster, had some bluing wear from the holster but it functions great and I'm happy with it, added it to my collection. It has always been one of my favorite pistols, got interested in them when I was a kid because it looked so much like a Luger. I have one with a AMT 10" barrel and a scope it shoots 1-2" groups at 75 yards all day long. I have shot a truck load of tree rats with it, if it misses it is my fault not the gun...... ;D

You didn't over pay. You got a good deal and you won't regret it. I bought a MK2 a couple of weeks ago, stainless 6 7/8",and had extra set of Volquartsen target grips which I don't care for,$200 FTF. I paid his asking price and actually felt guilty.

My dad gave me one just like that in the early 70s.  You couldn't buy it from me for twice what you paid, so you got a good deal, ya hear?

You did good and you wont be disapointed. I had one exactly like that stolen from me years ago. That little pistol never failed me. I shot every kind of ammo through it I could find and never had a problem. About a year ago I replaced it with a newer mark III.

I think your pistol is actually the Ruger Standard Model 22.  The Mk 1 pistols were their target .22 pistols with the adjustable rear sight(earlier manufacture ones had the Micro sight).

Back in the mid 60s I bought a ruger standard auto, red rooster, model. first year production. Paid $25.00 I believe for it. Sure wish I'd kept it.  :o But they come & they go.

I have one that I picked up from a friend who bought it in 1965 shot it a couple of times and placed it in a hiding place and never got it out till 3 years ago said he wanted me to have it. in original box with all papers would not take 500.00 for it. it looks new, as a side note when I worked in sporting goods years ago we sold them for 37.00 how times have changed.

I've got one in my safe that I use from time to time --bought it in the 70's for $50.00--shoots great. Had two of them--sold one years ago--replaced it with a newer model sporting a 6 inch barrel, and holding 10 rounds instead of the nine yours holds. In my opinion they are as good as the Browning Buck mark--my wife bought me one of them 2 or 3 years ago---I can't say this where my wife will see it--but I actually like my Rugers better than the Browning.

Good buy.  I have had one since 1979 with the 6.5" target barrel.   It was the first pistol my children learned to shoot.   They are gown now and have their own but when we shoot together they still like to shoot the old Ruger.  It was so accurate, they had respectable scores when they could barely hold up the gun.  I would never sell mine as it is part of the family.

Bill Ruger introduced it in 1949 as the Standard model. They sold for 37.00$ into the 1960s.  Times have changed, but it is the devaluation of the Federal Reserve Note that is responsible for much of the price increase.  When my daughters left home they each took a Mk1 5 1/2'' with them. Richard

I still have the MK-1 I purchased new in 1971 for $67.00.  It has the 5 1/2" bull barrel and checkered walnut grips with a thumbrest. It was a replacement for a High Standard Field King with two barrels.  The Ruger is far more accurate than the High Standard ever was and has been completely reliable.  I have not been tempted to replace it with another .22 rimfire.  You'll be glad you made the purchase.
Happy Trails!
