Resurrection Day..a mini message..
« on: April 04, 2010, 09:47:09 AM »
    Sometimes we read scripture and breeze past somne very significant things, simply because we lack the historical context. Let me start with a smal part of the resurrection narrative.. (John 20:6,7).

  " Then cometh Simoin Peter following him, and went into the sepelchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie. And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself."

    In ancient Israel as the master (of the house) gathered with his family at table, it was avery important time. A time of sharing with each member of the family. If the master stood to leave the table for any reason, his table napkin was a signal to his servants.
  If he crumpled the napkin carelessly and dropped it on the table, that was a signal which said, " I'm all done here, you can clean this stuff away..I am leaving this table and not coming back".
   On the other hand, if the master carefully folds the napkin and places it neatly upon the table he is saying, " Don't change a thing, don't take things away, please family, continue on here...because I am COMING BACK " !!!

Books about Jewish customs and traditions are good to read and learn things that help to understand the Bible better. I have one but I don't remember this being in it. I have wondered about the significance of the neatly folded head rap, why it was that way. The oil lamp surely must have come on when they saw that. Now I know.        Thank you very much!!

I just reread the scripture even though I'd read it many times I'd not seen the significance of the napkin being seperate. Thanks. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Thanks for posting. I love learning those "little things" buried within Scripture. Reading the Bible is great, and I should do it more, but actually studying the text-- and meanings and settings and culture,etc--- is so much more rewarding imo.

On a total side note, what does that reference then do to the "authenticity" of the Shroud of Turin which has the image of the entire body and face/head on one cloth ??

Tribready;
  The History Channel had a show on about the shroud jmjust last night. Now, don't get the idea I look to the History Channel for any authoritive information concerning scripture (they're usually very wrong), but this program was fairly even handed. Evenh the shroud "boosters" allowed for a separate napkin.
   I won't venture into the authenticity of the shroud..but while I won't simply dismiss it, we must recall the "relics" business was a busy trade in the dark & middle ages. If we were to gather all the pieces of the "true cross" held all over the world, we may find the "true cross" weighed about 12 tons..
   Still, we know some ancient "proofs" will start to emerge as we approach the end times. I would not be surprised to see the finding of the Ark of the Covenant or Noah's Ark.
   Still, we don't need relics or seemingly miraculous manifestations, if we are truly believers.
