45 70 at the range
« on: April 02, 2010, 11:53:59 AM »
Finally, some progress on one of my two 45 70s.  I got an approx 1" group at 100 yds using the Hornday 325 LE Ammo.  It took the addition of a 3x9x40 Redfield and some other fine tuning to get this group.  Now that the gun is acceptable I have to figure out how to duplicate this accuracy with my handloads.  I know it isn't going to happen with 500 grain RNFPGC cast lead, the photo I am posting shows the grouping of those bullets @ 100 yds, big triangle below the 12" round target.

Now if I can just remember to tweak the scope up and left so I actually hit the bullseye next time.

1" is plenty good.  I think you are correct about 500 grn. bullets, if your guns are not the BC.  I think the rifling in a regular 45-70 has the wrong twist for heavy bullets.

H&R 45-70s have a 1:20" twist, it's fine for properly sized 500gr bullets, see Long Range Sights for the BC and Target in the FAQs, lots of links to previous relevant threads, John Boy and Bernie have both shot their 45-70 BCs to 800-1000yds using 500gr cast bullets.

My Sharps has a 1:20 twist and does just fine with 500 grain bullets.  However, my Handi prefers 405 grain cast bullets.  Go figure.  Each rifle is an individual.

500 grain cast grouping might be me, not the Handi, as I close my eyes when I pull the trigger.   :D

Also, the eyepiece of a Redfield scope is much stronger than a pair of $5 shooting glasses, in fact almost as strong as my forehead.
