357 Max or 357 Mag??
« on: March 13, 2010, 01:53:09 PM »
Has anyone used the 357 Max enough to form an opinion?
In comparing it to the 357 Mag, how much better or less
would it be?
Also, how available is ammo? Can you use 38 special, and 357mag ammo
in the 357 Max barrel ?..
 Thanks, ???

I don't have it in a Contender any-longer, but I do have it in a H&R and LOVE IT!!!  It's one of my all time favorite chamberings!

I used to have both the 21" and a 10" barrel for the Contender. It shot Mags and Maxis just as well and does a number on Whitetails.

Loaded ammo is unknown to me as I reload 99% of what I shoot.

I love my .357 maxis, White tails hate it, it shoots the .38s .357mags and .360DWs just as well.

Reed sells loaded ammo as do a couple other places but I reload and cast my own.

Mild to wild .357 max will get it done. 8)

I love my Max!! But if I didn't load my own probably not! As far as shooting 38SPC or 357Mag. in mine I don't do and will not do. If one does I suggest cleaning the chamber good before going back to the longer Max.

When the 357 Max was introduced in the revolvers like the Dan Wesson and Ruger, it was more or less a total flop.  However, the cartridge really shines in the Contender!  If you do not handload, you'll be better served with a 357 Magnum.  If you are considering the 357 Max, you probably need to consider "rolling your own".  I'm pretty sure that factory ammo is pretty scarce, and rather expensive.

If you really want to get into the 357 Max, it would be worth the money and time to buy an inexpensive/used reloading set up for it.  Like I said, the Max is fantastic in the Contender, probably one of the best!

Yep the Max is a fantastic round for the Contender and I'm a big fan.  But, when you compare a Mag in a 10" or longer closed breech barrel it becomes a different animal as well. ::)

Site sponsor Reed's lists Max ammo for the non-handloaders.

I have an Encore barrel, 15 in., that I have taken afew deer with. It`s not a bang flop gun, but with a double lung shot I have never had one go far. Mine is a Bullberry and is a sub-moa barrel. I just took it off and am going to try a .460 barrel, but plan to keep it around because of the way it shoots.

I have a encore carbine barrel in 357 max.very accurate set up.it seems to shoot the heavier bullets better than the 158 gr stuff.

Love my 357 Max.  I have shot the cal since I bought my first contender in 1984.  Also had the Blackhawk in 7.5" and 10" way back when!!  I also have a factory Max bbl for my NEF.  It does almost what a 35 Rem does.  Wallacem in Ga
