trimming .357 max brass to 360 Dan Wesson
« on: April 03, 2010, 02:40:01 PM »
Just picked up a .357 mag SB1 handi today.  I've got some max brass that I bought to load for a friend's rifle.  I trimmed one to 360 Dan Wesson length and it chambers just fine.  The problem is, I can't find any 360 brass.  Can I trim the max brass to fit or will it be too thick?  I know that the easiest thing to do will be to ream to max.  I plan to do that but this would get me shooting sooner.  I'm also kinda curious to see what the velocity differences are between the three cartridges.

It is possible to trim maxie to 360 D W but lot of work. They have reamer
Up in the Fax  Quick has a reamer Lot cheaper Than 360 Brass.
Just seams a waste time to trim brass. Take care .  Datil

Generally speaking we like to fill a chamber with as long of brass as possible to minimize the jump of the bullet unsupported into the leade. But...so many guys are having such good luck with their rechambered Max's even shooting .38SPL and .357Mag, way short by that standard, that I would save that brass for if/when you decide to rechamber too. Shoot it with the regular cases for now and only trim those if you cant get anything else to work. Accurracy in that cal. does not seem to be case length critical.

I know when I had my .357 the chamber was so long that I could trim just a little off the Max brass and it fit very well and was longer than the 360 brass I had. I did not see enough differance to chamber to max .Kurt

I think that Starline used to sell 360 brass.  You might want to check them out.

Starline only makes it occasionally, it's backordered.

Reed's ammo on this forum had some a while back.  I trim my maxi brass, but it doesn't have to be cut to 360 length.  My 357 had obviously a longer  than normal throat.  I use the Lee trimmer and a cordless drill, I made my own stem for the case trimmer so all of the cases are uniform.  I really need to sign up for the reamer, but just haven't done it yet.....

I had to trim 360 brass .010" to fit in mine, it's a Maxi now, the 180gr Speer FP is touching the lands at 2.3"!!

Thanks for all the insight.  The gun is definitely going to be reamed to max.  I just thought I could squeeze a little more power out of it before it gets reamed.  I trimmed a case to 1.42" to get it to chamber.  Nobody has 360 brass.  I've ordered 200 max cases so I may just trim a few to play with.  Cabelas had max brass in stock yesterday for $25 per 100 if anyone needs any.

You might contact these folks just to see.  It isn't listed, but it was not when I bought some from them.  Very nice to deal with.

Out of curiousity, What kind of velocity difference would I see between the 360 and the max?

wow, I have not seen that bullet, but My Horn 180 xtp is only 2.0", loaded to the longest crimp groove choice.  How much of that bullet is held by the case when you are out that far?  I originally was using the deeper seating groove, and then moved it out.  Now I am adjusting loads to account for the larger case capacity I found.

Loaded .010" off the lands it's seated .200" in the case, thinking that may not provide sufficient bullet pull, I crimp with the Lee factory crimp die.
