The guns are back up to spray.

Hold on bear!!  Sorry about the spray, but just wait a minute and stop charging while I pull my gun up on you!!  OK, thanks!  Gonna shoot now!

There is no back up, there is no second chance.  You are talking about one of the fastest sprinting mammals in the world.

What is your problem...If you had read the whole response you would have seen we had several people with guns and spray.   Who made you the expert and why do you need to be so sarcastic. Did you not get your way as child.

hope the wind is right for the spray !

Spray has a 95% success rate in stopping attacks.  Firearms are less than 50%.  This is research done in Alaska.  However, I would not want to not have a gun.

I actually feel a bit better with my Ruger Bisley in 45 Colt stoked with some of my hardcast handloads.  But the 44 will do.

I also think that it would be hard to hit a dangerous animal charging you. It's not like punching paper at the range.  The only critter i had to shoot in self defence was a jumbo coon that i shot out of a tree and thought he would try and run up my leg after the Walkers got after him again.

Check out this video.  Tell me these guys didn't have to clean out their draws when all was said and done!!!

Myself, I like shooting my revolvers, but I dare say I've never shot even a hair of a bear with one.   I do believe the best handgun for such a task is the one you carry without regard to caliber.  How 'bout you?

Did YOU ever shoot an unprovoked charging carnivore with anything?

It counts.  That was an interesting experience I bet.  A friend shot an elk that got angry with him.  The fur along the back was still "up" after it died.   I shot a bear years ago that ran towards me after the shot, during which time I shot it more.  It gave up when ten feet from me.  I don't think it was "charging", rather it was running away, just in the wrong direction.  Regardless, the implications were the same, just like with your deer.

THAT'S FOR SURE !
my dad and i were getting ready to leave his stand , we dog hunt , anyway i had met him and was talking when we heard dogs running . His stand was on a path that deer had made to a swamp , it was closed in by briers , weeds etc. well about 9 deer came down the path , the first one in line was pushed by the others almost into our lap , she had no where to go and neither did we !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

was walking down an old woods road that a fisher was coming up a a high rate of speed.  by the time my feet came back to earth and the old shotgun leveled it had made a right turn and gone. if he had ment to eat me id be gone.  as far as bear spray goes,  ive been maced by many that couldnt hit an inmate with a fogger when the you know what hit the fan. 10% sure do work on people though.  think it would be kinder to the bear to shoot em.

Forgive me Graybeard.
Never ever been charged by anything including a bear.  However....Went to NW Montana after black bear with my .54 hawken and round ball.  Outfitter carried a 460 roland, but he guided the two bow hunters.  His wife was my guide...from experience of walking up the mountain....I had no chance of outrunning her. SO, his advice to me.  If a Grizzly decides to charge you.  Stand very still, roll the hammer back and when it gets there, do your best to shove it down its throat and pull the trigger (not the set trigger), then relax, cause you are gonna feel like a semi hit ya...cause it did.  Now the real question:  Have shot a lot of 44 mag and 357 over a number of years....As many have said, the 357 can handle most game (Whitetail and smaller) under the right conditions.  The 44 can handle the same with more authority (yes the 41 to).  Have yet to meet the man than can get off 6 quick shots with full .44 mag load.  Not to say someone can't, I just ain't seen it.
Now thats my bear story and I am sticking to it....come to think of it, I am sticking to the chair too...time to go

if  any 4 legged animal is  charging

one  head shot is all  you need

but  fire  all 6

if only  one  hit brain  or spine  good
won't matter  what caliber

even   if all 6  miss the brain  they will  most likely be
full length  of body hits
44 is more  likely to  break bones [bear   or any thing] and  go all the way through

why  is  it pepperspray  works 80%
but  bird  shot  to  the eyeballs  and  the  nose and  teeth and  toung
at  peperspy  distences  won't work  50% of the time

most  would agree bird shot  for  bears  is suicidal
then recommend  pepper
when drugs are outlawed only out laws will have drugs

1976  the group that I bear hunted with was in Canada on a spring bear hunt with hounds. The dogs were on a big bear and my friend got in close with  20 gauge slugs, hit the bear twice knocking the bear down but he got back up sending dogs flying thru the air. The bear started straight for the two of us and my friend,s gun was out of shells. Stepping past my friend and waiting for no dogs in the way the charge was stopped with a shot from a winchster 30-30 placed  in the head between the eye and the ear. The bear dropped in his tracks .  He weighed 528 lbs, a nice spring bear . You need enought gun, but you got to place the shot in the right spot.  freetrapper

most common  scenario  is

human  attack or dog attack

125gr hollow point 357
has  a stopping rate   of 97% with a single hit to the torso
the  highest  in DOCUMENTED  studies of actual shootings  [.40 smith might now tie that]

don't ask me why it out performs  the 44 mag
probly other factors  as  better  trained  folks carry 357  or  .40 smith

i carry the 357 cause its smaller
if i think  i might actually need my gun
i hope i have the 44
when drugs are outlawed only out laws will have drugs

Well, it was much smaller than a bear, but I was charged by two feral dogs while out with my old Brittany Spaniel.  I didn't even realize they were on us until I heard the leaves rustling.  The shepherd mix looking dog was only about 5' or less and closing (heading for my dog, not me), when I was able to fire 1 round out of my S&W 25-5, with Win silvertips.  Fortunately it hit him right above his left eye. The other dog, some other mongrel decided the loud noise was enough to send him the opposite direction.   I can't imagine being charged by a large bear that is bent on doing me harm.  There wasn't time to fire 6 rounds that time at least.

WOW  :o 3 pages!!!! 357 vs. 44mag vs grizzlies, vs black bears vs. big bears vs. little bears (are there really any little bears when they are actually attacking?) After reading 3 pages of this I'm hungry, Think I'll take a break and have a snack, now lets see apples or oranges?? I don't want to hijack the original post but, what do you think, apples or oranges? O.K.....Back to the subject,.........338 Winchester unless I have to pick one from the original post, I think it will be, oranges.  ;D

Well I really like apples and oranges, and on occasion will eat a pear, but if I was being charged by a grizzly I would rather have a grapefruit because it's bigger.  I probably couldn't throw it as fast as one of the smaller fruits but because of it's superior size and weight it should have better penetration and therefore a faster and more humane kill...,  but I think I'd want a quamquat for backup because if the grapefruit to the head didn't stop him........quamquat may... :D  my bad..
