Caliber input wanted
« on: May 06, 2010, 05:49:52 PM »
Soooo, Tell me....Why I should add a 14".30 Herrett barrel to my ever expanding Contender barrel collection ?
            I now have a 14" .17HMR ,a 14" 7x30 Waters and a 16" 6.5 JDJ  and need to justify my thoughts....
Hello-My name is Shane and I think I'm a "barrelholic"...... No; All jokes aside do I really need this barrel, this caliber ? or am I dillussional and all rationality has been flushed down the crapper ?

Any and all input in this matter will be greatly appreciated.  Shane

I probably wouldn't go for a .30 Herrett, personally.  Not to say you shouldn't, but if I were looking to add a .30 caliber barrel to my Contender collection, I'd look at either the .30-30 AI or the .309 JDJ.

If you're not set on the .30 caliber, but want to go up from what you have, I'd take a serious look at the .375 JDJ or the .45-70.  If you want to go down from what you have, a .222 Remington or a 6x45 would be a good place to look.

First of all....ya got to get rid of this "need" philosophy....insert "want" instead!  Now, if you want a 30Herrett...go for it!  My personal thoughts on a 30Herret are that it's a great caliber, but designed and best suited for a 10" barrel.  It was designed to equal or better a 30-30 using less powder and less muzzle blast while achieving better velocity with a lighter bullet in a 10" barrel.  When you go to the longer(14")tube, the 30-30, 30-30AI or 309JDJ produce better results, especially with heavier pills. ;)

Loading dies might be expensive, you might want to look around for a set before you commit to buying the barrel.  Other than that, the 30 Herrett is a very fine cartridge, especially if you like to piddle with wildcats (like me! :).

Like Hopalong said, the 30-30 is a better pick in a longer barrel.

If you're into masochism, definitely go for the 30 Herrett.  You'll then be able to buy expensive dies and practice your case reforming procedures on 30/30 brass.  Actually, I've heard that 375 Winchester brass makes more durable cases but it's more expensive.

I, by the way, have a 357 Herrett so logic doesn't always prevail.

I have a 30 Herrett in 10".  For one, I'm partial to the shorter tubes, but as said the tradition of the 30 Herrett in 10" is what drew me to that caliber (and the other "classic" Contender calibers).  I'd personally go with 30-30 AI in a 14" or 30 Herrett in a 10" but do what speaks to you.

30 Herrett was my first case forming lesson and if I had it to do over again I'd start with something easier like 7-30 Waters from 30-30 cases, or even 357 Herrett.  Those I think would be an easier start.  My problem was that I didn't size my brass enough so there were stresses on the first firing that made accuracy terrible.  The accuracy settled down on subsequent firings once I got the shoulder in the right place.

Bottom line, if you like the 14" tubes better then pass on the 30 Herrett in hopes that a good 30-30 AI or 309 JDJ would find its way to you.  MHO

I would go with the plain old 30-30.

One of my favorite barrels is the 30-30 10inch. Ammo is so cheap I dont reload it anymore. Contender barrels are like food, the line between want and need gets blurry. I had to have a second frame for my left hand. There may be a 12-step program.

If you like wildcats, and you think you need a 30 cal, I would go 30-30AI.
Use 375 brass to make case and life will be good.

Plain and simple, Herrett says hunting caliber, just like Waters.
