Season ending trip to Lake of the Woods
« on: March 23, 2010, 04:25:37 PM »
I closed out the hard water season this last weekend. Spent three days on Lake of the Woods. Went with ten others and fought through wind and iffy access points to get limits each day.

The Rainy River opened saturday afternoon, maybe earliest ever according to many locals. We witnessed a truck go through the ice Friday, heard everyone got out. It didn't look too good for the truck though, was hanging on by rear axle with cab under water about a half mile off shore. We found twenty-four inches of good ice at every test hole but the old roads were much worn out.

Excellent trip though.  Fish were very active feeding, but were scattered. We were hitting fish at about one or two per hour. I really like the late ice, though this year was a bit more dramatic than needed.

The spring warm up kind of caught some guys off guard   :o

Went out in N.Wisc one day, 30+ inches of ice, no problem. Couldn't even get on the ice 3 days later, heard of a 4-wheeler going thru the ice about the same time-maybe a day or two later. Crazy.

Pretty unique up there, boats on the Rainy and ice fishermen on the lake at the same time.

I live on a lake west of Duluth a ways.  Last Sun I was out cleaning up after the pigs that have fish houses on the lake. They can leave a lot of stuff on the Ice, anyway there is open water in the shallows today. The geese are back. I haven't seen an otter or beaver yet, they usually hit the open spots. Definatly early this year. Guess Al Gore is right we have global warming. ::)
