ANOTHER GREAT DAY AT THE RANGE WITH THE 38-55
« on: April 14, 2010, 09:39:50 AM »
I am sure we all have a gun that stands out among the rifle and pistols we own.
I have to say beside shooting my flinters my 38-55  B.C. seem to stand on the top of my list and the best dam iron peep site gun and she can shoot.I seen a few shot were I blink my eye or think I did not follow threw the shot and still it in a clover leaf group.
I am not much for centerfire but my 38-55 will drive tacks my load 255 sarco mould FP .380 soft cast BHN 10 to 12 no gas checks with IMR 3031 33.5 grains SHOOTS OUSTANDING
almost forgot to mention starline brass williams FP rear sight and a t/c .400 front red fiber optic front sight

lonewolf5348, did you have to ream the neck to get your's to take the .380's?  Mine is just a little tight on them, will chamber the 379's in the Winchester brass just fine.  DP  Never mind, I see the Starline brass.  Can't find any of it now.  DP

DP, have you tried fire-formed 30-30 brass with the .380s? The case ends up a bit shorter in the chamber, which gets the neck back a little farther in the chamber body taper. Dont resize, of course, and give the case neck a good chamfer after fire forming. If it fits decently mess about with various seating depths and no crimp.

No I haven't tryed that.  To be honest, I haven't shot it for quite a while, and I've got a few hundred rounds of Winchester 38-55 brass.  Gonna have to get off my duff and get a throat reamer rented and clean it out.  DP

I would say the FPS around the 1700 mark or a a tad higher
I find with the winchester brass the best I can do with cast is .379 diameter
Starline brass I got as high as .3815 (no neck reamed)
any one need a great 38-55 caster shoot me a pm on the sarco mould 4 grease groove 255 FP
I also find my barrel like the cast just to stop at the lands .

lonewolf,

I would bet your 255 grain bullet is going faster than 1700.  I load 30 grains of AA2230 under my Lyman 285 grainers and out of my 26 inch Win 94 barrel I get about 1850.

Went to the gun show today and no Starline 38-55 brass in the show. :'(  Found plenty of Winchester brass, but already have plenty of it. :P  Wish they would get more made, MidSouth didn't even list 38-55 brass.  Natchez and Midway have been out for some time, don't like to use Midway any more after what Bill told us.  Their shipping charges are outrageous. >:(  DP

Rick, the Lyman 48th lists a 249gr cast bullet at 1506fps with 31gr IMR3031, and 1812fps with 35gr from a 30" barrel for comparison, so you're somewhere in the middle.  ;)

DP, the Starline site states WHEN SUFFICIENT BACKORDER ACHIEVED, they'll make more, so place your order.  ;)

I should add that I'm using blown out .30-30 brass, it is quite a bit shorter than .38-55 brass.

The traditional chamber is just a long taper, with no 'ball seat' as in more modern chambers and a quick chamfer into the rifling. Once the bullet leaves the reformed 30-30 case mouth and hits that taper maybe it gains some velo? It certainly should reduce pressures over having it right up to the rifling, not unlike the long leade in Weatherby's.
I've yet to do 'the definative' test of my 30-30 reformed vs 38-55 in my H&R TM but for all my informal shots the reformed is working pretty well. I dont have a stick of Starline to test out in my chamber to see if I could use .380s, but hate to buy a bunch of it to only find I ultimately need to re-throat anyway and my WW would work as is.
BTW, .379 in reformed Rem. 30-30 brass, various brand LRP, 18.0 of IMR4227. Hits the same sandspit spot at 150ish yds out, old El Paso Weaver K-2.5. mil-seated position.
