what is optimal barrel length for the 357 Maximum?
« on: April 11, 2010, 04:49:19 PM »
I am in line for the Max reamer (Thanks Tim!) and have 2 candidates to ream. One is my iron sighted 22" barrel and the other is a scope only 22". I would like to have a 16.5 to 18 inch length barrel but I am wondering how the performance will be from a shorter tube. Can anyone share their experiences or information with this question?

Thank you

Jeff

My 18 inch gets right at 2100fps with a 187gr FNGC, on top of LilGun. Using small rifle primers and no pressure signs. It is very consistant and I do not think I care to push it any further.  hth   Doug

The expansion ratio is going to be something like 13:1 for a 16.5" barrel.  More length is not going to give much more velocity.  But start with it long and gradually cut it off and chronograph as you go.
