Adam,

Necchi's advice is good regarding the variance in the bullets and measurements.  If you measure this way do quite a few bullets and you will see a bit a variation.  You need to measure the length of each bullet and then the length from the bullet base to chamber face and add them up.  Also, some bullets are concave on the base so you need to correct for this.  When I do this I always take the shortest calculated OAL and then subtract for my setback from the rifling, usually 0.02".  I have found this to be a little better than using a split case, but I think that had to do with my lack of skill cutting the brass.  Also, if you do this with a cast bullet put them in the chamber with it almost horizontial and then slowly rotate it vertical.  If you drop a heavy lead slug into the chamber it will breech seat itself a bit and give you a long measurement.

All my reloading gear came into today

I full length re-sized the brass and problem solved, they chamber like new brass now.

Tried to find a general reloading manual or hornady manual and the only one available at my local gun shop was a speer manual. I don't plan on reloading any of their bullets so it was of no use to me. If someone out there has Hornady's new manual if you could please look up the .270 win 110 grain v-max for me and post what the min/max charge is for IMR4350 and COL that would be great. I think i might have found it listed on the Hodgdon website but i wouldn't mind making sure.

The loads i have made so far are 54.0 grains IMR4350 110g V-mav at COL of 3.240" which according to my measurements will put the bullet .010" off the rifling.

adam,

The website data for Hodgdon is for a 110 grain HP, not a VMAX, which I believe is a tipped bullet.  I will check in my Lyman manual in the AM and see if it has data for this bullet/powder combo.  Maybe some folks with more experience will chime in but 0.01" off the rifling seems a tad close to me.

I had the exact same problem with my Rossi in .243.  I couldn't re-use the cases from factory loads since the Lee Loader only neck sizes. The cases would not chamber.  So I bought a Lee Classic press and a set of small base RCBS dies.  Solved the problem.  However, before that, I simply stayed away from hot loads.  In that case, the Lee loader worked fine since the brass didn't grow much around the base.  I still use the Lee Loader from time to time if I just need to neck size a few cases.  I also like to use it as a de-capper.  Nice to have options.

Thanks BB,

The only bullet i can find that hornady makes for the .270 win in 110 grain is the v-max, thats why i think the one listed on the hodgdon site must be for a v-max. But if you can find a load listed in your lyman book for this bullet that would be awesome.

Also i thought from what i read .010" off the rifling was more of a starting point. Don't some guys load them to touch the rifling? I know if you have no free play you have to back towards minimum powder charges to prevent to high of pressure, please correct me if this is wrong

Thanks again guys

Adam,

I'm a bit of chicken to get too close to the lands because of the pressure spike that you get if the bullet is touching.  I have measured a lot of bullets and there is a lot variance in length and profile.  If the profile of the bullet varies from bullet to bullet it can change the depth that you seat the bullet.  If I where loading for a bolt gun I would be more brave, but I've had some hard to open issues in these breakopen guns with loads that according to the data I have are not close to maximum.  Probably safest to follow Necchi's advance and stay at the reccomended OAL until you work up a good load.

This does give me a new research project.  Next box of bullets I get I will measure bullet lengths and measure the distance to the lands for each bullet and put it in a spreadsheet.  Check diameters and weights while I am at it.  Try and get an idea of how much variation there is in the projectiles I am buying.  Probably scare me enough to stop buying the cheapest bullets. :D

Will head out to the Possum Lodge (I stole Mr. Green's lodge name for my reload/gun room.  It is in a barn so the name kinda fits.) in a bit and see what is in Lyman #49 for your VMax.

Adam,

Lyman #49 has data for three Hornady bullets, 100, 140 & 150 grains, but of course not the bullets you have to load.  I don't know anyone with a Hornady reload manual, sorry.

The Hornady book I saw listed this for the Hornday 110 gr bullets for the 270 Win
IMR 4350   47.9gr - 58.4gr  with a COL of 3.165" this was for both the V-max and the HP.

54gr would be between the 3000fps (53.2gr) and 3100fps (54.9gr)  entries.

Thanks Guys,

Atleast i know im safe on the powder charge using 54.0 grains, puts me about where i wanted to start with a medium charge and over 3000fps to give me the trajectory im looking for. These handi's must have very long throats as everything i have loaded so far is 3.238>3.240" and the gun closes easily. I have coated the bullet in case lube and even when i loaded one to 3.250" today it still wasen't touching the rifling yet.

I would think i should be safe with atleast .010" free play and medium powder charge to start. I hope to get to the range saturday if it doesn't rain and will keep an eye on pressure signs with them. Any issues and i will stop shooting them and bring them home and seat the bullet a bit deeper.
