Would a Ruger MKII stainless 10" bull barrel be unwieldy?
« on: April 02, 2010, 06:06:10 AM »
I am in a quandry about getting a .22 for plinking and informal target shooting and this 10" bull barrel Ruger came up locally.  Before i drive 100+ miles to check it out I wanted to get some opinions.  Looks looong in the pictures  :-\.  What would be a fair price for one in excellent condition?
Thanks

I just dug mine out of he safe last week and fired it. It is a gun that every time I shoot it I ask myself why Idon't shoot it more often.
Anything less thing $400 would be a deal

They were the rage in the 22 IHMSA matches, as they shot like hotcakes and were not expensive back then.

Smong,
I know this is comparing apples to oranges, but, from my experience with both of my H&R model 686's, 10", and 12" barrel.
You may find that shooting off hand is a bit uncomfortable. They are just to muzzle heavy for me.
I love both of them, and both shoot very well from a rest.
Freehand, at least for me, is a whole different story.
I have no experience with the Ruger though, so it's balance may be excellent.
Just wanted to give you my 2 pennies worth about my H&R's.
Good luck with whatever decision you make!!
Jim

Please be aware this is just IMHO,

But YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you desire a "carry gun."

I have had longer hand guns - 7 1/2" and super 14 contenders etc., and except for my scoped RUGER Mll Slabside the longest if the 5.5" RUGER Redhawk.

The shorter and more compact are just soooo much handier to carry on a days outing.

Also, except for "social" carry and the scoped Slabside (shoulder rig), everything is carried in a left side, butt forward cross draw rig.

This makes for easy carry in a car/pickup or while riding the hills on the 4wheeler and is out of the way if I also happen to be carring a long gun.

The shorter handguns are just more user friendly if "carry" is involved.

Keep em coming!

Well Guys, I made the plunge and traded for the 10" Ruger with a 2X Jap Tasco.  ;D  Everything you all said is true, and for what I am going to use it for (plinking, targets), it's an amazing pistol.  Definitely would be cumbersome to carry all day though. First magazine it put 9/10 in a 2" bullseye at 25 yds.  I was consistently hitting 12 ga shells at 25 yd and clays at 50 yd were too darn easy.  :o  I couldn't do too much standing, but sitting on the ground it was deadly.  I went through 150 rnds in no time and can't wait to get to the real range and shoot it off the bench on paper out to 100 yds when we get a calm day.
Thanks for the info.

smong2000,

Ya probably already know this, but try a bunch of different .22 ammos and your RUGER should do way better then 9 out of 10 into 2" at 25 yards.

Could be the ammo, could be the scope, but given a good rest, you ain't seen nothing yet!

Some scopes have very bad paralax problems which could cause real problems.

I had my 2X Leupold set to 25yds, by the factory and it shoots ten of it's favored ammo into a ragged hole at 25yd.

Need to do more testing, but seems at this point that Wolf Match Extra is the best of the best in my Mark ll Slabside.

Keep em coming!

Its a hand rifle and a fine one at that . But not a carry gun for walks in the woods unless you tote it in hand or cross chest holster.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

It may be a bit inconvenient to get it where it is going.  But when you sit down to do serious work you'll be glad you have it.  Yes, try different ammo and keep the targets.  Begin a notebook so you'll know what you tried and its result.  You can put on a different scope for doing 100yd range work if you have one; a rifle scope will do.  Then change back to your pistol scope.  All they need for cleaning is a wet patch or two, then a dry one.  Use a toothpick around the breech to get out the powder and lube blowback.  Keep the metal protected.  Be very careful of the rifling crown if you use a rod from the muzzle.  RP

Yes and no.
I have a browning Buck mark in 10+" and it is not bad to shoot.
the hard part of the long barrels is finding a comfortable holster.
The long barrel on a strong side digs into you when you sit under a tree or in a stand ans the barrel is well below your butt.
a cross draw works but again you have the chair problems and I ma not real fond of shoulder holsters as you need to wear them under your coat to get them to tie down on your belt mostly on the off side to keep the gun comfortable and in place.
I also have two standard buck marks that go hunting with me.
At one point I had a scout scope mounted on the top of mine and with a slight modified shooting stance it was as accurate as any rifle and even won a couple shoot offs agains rifles with it.
I would take the auto in my right hand, hold my let arm strain out, Put the trigger guard in the inside of my elbow and bend my left hand back to grab my right elbow or forearm.  I had the scope set up so it was blurry if i was going to get too close to the slide as it came back.
