New to Me Moson DW .357
« on: March 07, 2010, 12:28:33 PM »
Got my Stainless DW .357 today and love it.  This is the second DW .357 I have had and have
regretted selling the first one.  It is in excellent shape and came with the original
container, tools, handbook and even had the second half of the registration card.
Serial no is S/0015XX.  Has the heavy barrel cover with vent rib, and adjustable sights.
Any feedback I can get would be appreciated.

Do have a question due to an issue I am having with reloads.  Factory ammo, double action, no issues.
Reloads (double action only).  Out of 58 rds I have had 5 that did not fire unless shot single action.  Initial check
showed a light strike by firing pin.  Moved to different chamber, same results.  No
consistency in any chamber.  Reload will not fire even with 5 double action strikes in 5 different chambers.....But
will fire every time single action ???????????  All fire in my Marlin .357 rifle.  Any ideas ?

The springs might have been changed out at some time, for Wolf or other lighter springs.  Does it have a very light single action trigger?  My Monson 357 from years ago had a heavy trigger and I switched to lighter springs and it was picky about which rounds it would set off.  I found that Winchester primers solved my problem as they are softer.  You might also check the thickness of the base of the rounds that didn't work, a thinner base puts the primer further from the pin.  I had the worst problem with CCI primers as they seem to be the hardest.

+1 on the primers, some folks use rifle primers in pistol cases! If they are unknown reloads, that might be the issue.

Thanks for the reply.  I was using CCI primers and I do have Winchester so I will give them a try this weekend.  Yes on the light smooth trigger pull.  Will also check the bases.  My first DW had an issue with reloads but it was consistently the same two chambers.  I called DW customer service and they had me send it back.  Returned in a couple of week and never had a problem again.  I also noticed that the double action pull was a lot better.  I also got to checking the styrofoam container and it has the model number on the side - 715VH

I also tried out the 357's I have loaded for my Marlin using Little gun powder.  No apparent pressure issues.  Believe I am really going to like this one.  Found out later that it fits the holster I had for my ruger Mark II....things just keep getting better.....

Finally got work and Honey DO's out of the way.  Winchester primers worked great.  Thanks.
After firing off the Win primers I started cleaning...How much of a forcing cone should these
barrels have....sure does not look like much.  Curious but with enough sense not to put my
hand by the barrel / cylinder, I went back out to my backyard range and
dropped the hammer on one round with the side of the pistol approx 6 inches from my target
(81/2 x 11) and it blew a big section out of it. I do not get this much destruction from my 38 ??

There should be a metal shim, kind of like a feeler guage, you put in between the barrel and the cylinder face when you change out the barrels.

If I remember right it is .006 but I'm not positive. I'm sure someone here will let me know if I'm mistaken.

You may need to reset the barrel if the cylinder gap is too large.

I usually set the cylinder/forcing cone gap at .004 but the gauge shipped from Dan Wesson is .006

Also when checking gap; check all cylinders as some tend to be as much as .002 off, so set gap on the tightest clyinder, and you can get a feeler gauge from an auto parts store with the range that'll give you a better gap.

Have the original gauge and tools.  I set for one cylinder but did not check all.  Next step, check all cylinders.  Thanks again.
I have the next 4 days off so I should get the time.
