bait for deer in michigan
« on: April 12, 2010, 03:29:04 AM »
i  just heard a press release, the gaylord michigan man won his case.
he was ticketed by the dnr for deer who were eating from his bird feeder.
he went to court and won his case, saying the rules for the baiting ban were too vague.
so, the dnr is going to ( has to ) rewrite the rules.

this could be, could be a good thing.. or they will make things even more restrickive

From the amount of bait I see sold at gas stations I doubt if it will make much difference. ???

the dnr needs to spend there time figure how to restore our deer heard and figuring how many deer can really be harvested and what sex without hurting the herd and quit wasting there time and our money trying to tell people how to hunt them and what to use to do it.

truer words have not been spoken.

i wonder how many deer starved over the winter from lack of food , or were taken by wolves

The deer here on Da U.P. have had the easiest winter in the 20 years I've been here.  They never even yarded up around here.  The lack of deep snow I'm sure also made it easier for them to avoid wolf attacks.

As far as baiting is concerned, it didn't work well here last season because of the tremendous amount of available forage.  I personally prefer not to hunt over bait.

pete, your right about the easy winter, i spent about 5 days of the 2009 season around the Gwinn area. no snow, sunny and relatively warm days
i did see a whole mess of coyotes, every evening hunt and a guy i hunted with saw a smaller wolf two mornings in a row. and i talked with a few of the local home owners near by and they said , that the deer were not coming into thier yards for food like they usually do.
i have , in the past hunted over bait and without bait equally. i see just as many deer without the bait as i did with it .
if the DNRE choose to limit or eliminate baiting, then i feel they should be honest about why, not use scare tactics and make new laws that put honest poeple in jeopardy of fines, i.e the man from gaylord and his bird/small game feeders.
i was more interested in knowing if anyone had heard whether or not the DNRE has issued any statements or edited rules of the baiting law.
i would guess, by the time the fall hunting season comes around , we'll be hearing some news about any changes...
