NEF Newbie
« on: April 07, 2010, 07:26:31 AM »
Well I took the plunge. After joining Graybeard, began browsing the forums and found the NEF forum. Well, interest became desire and I started looking for an NEF rifle. I saw that they do not list the 280 Remington (which is what I really wanted) as a complete rifle on their site, but they must have at one time because I found one NIB at a gun store. It has a 26" barrel and a laminated stock. The stock has a gold colored medallion which I really didn't need but other than that I really like its appearance. A couple of questions please. Has anyone had NEF do a trigger job for them and do they do a good job of it? What have you folks been getting as far as accuracy? I'm really looking forward to shooting this after I get the trigger smoothed and lightened. I could do it myself (I see the DIY info in the forum) and I've done trigger jobs before but I thought I'd have NEF do it if their price is reasonable. Thanks for your input.

WELCOME!!

yes Remington can and will do trigger jobs. A number of guys have had them done. I have not. I do them myself. After the first one they are very easy. If you do do one, be sure to GO SLOW! Do not remove metal, only smooth whats there.

I have had a 280 and most are very good shooters.
 Good luck with yours!!

I had my first Handi (in 1992) sent right back to the factory upon receiving it from the dealer.   Seems it had a 9.5 pound rough trigger pull.  I wrote a letter to their Customer Service rep and explained the situation as totally unacceptable.    He responded back to me apologizing and promised the trigger would be made right.   I got my Handi back in a little less than 3 weeks.  Trigger pull was now smooth as glass and breaks clean right at 4 lbs. which is fine for my hunting.

I don't know how the CS is since Big Green absorbed Marlin/H&R.   I imagine a few Handi owners out there have knowledge they will share.

Welcome!! H&R's trigger work policy is in the FAQs and Help, use the page search for Ilion's Policy on Trigger Pull;)

The 280 is a good one to own..

Ammo selection..here's 2 groups from one of them I've owned..

Mine liked the cheap stuff..and the more expensive loadings..Others have done a lot of reloading for them and perhaps they can fill you in on the particulars of their loads..

Good Luck

Hi remsonly,
I am not what one would call a "regular" poster here, but I am a regular "lurker"...in fact, that's me sitting in the front row now, pencil and paper in hand.
Anyway, I personally think you've made a good choice with the NEF .280

I have the same rifle you described in .280, albeit no medallion. I also own a couple other NEF's and they are quite possibly the best "bang" for your buck available.
My .280 is topped of with a Leupold 2x7 and is quite possibly the best long range rifle I have ever owned.
Less than 1" groups are quite common, and less than 4.5" groups at 300 yds.... if I flinch, or jerk the trigger just right, and that is darn hard to beat, no matter what you're shooting.
I have several bolt guns that will not shoot as good, not to say the don't shoot well at all, it's just the accuracy of this particular .280 is somewhat phenomenal, IMO.

Now the kicker to this little story is the fact that when I bought the rifle, I bought 5 boxes of FUSION 140gr bullets just to have the brass for reloading....in fact, this ammo was the only .280 the store had so I bought it all!

Now, in all honesty, two years later I am wondering if I will ever be able to load ammo as accurate as the FUSION for this rifle.
And, needless to say, I am quite stingy with what's left of my factory ammo, as my handloads are leaving a lot to be desired at this point.

I just wanted to pass this little story on to you so you will know that it's very possible that somewhere along the line, you are going to make a lot worse mistake than buying that NEF .280. Plus, it is quite possible that you may stumble across a factory load that will provide accuracy very hard to duplicate by handloading.

Russ...

Welcome, I have the 280 and a couple of others.  Great caliber, Fusion ammo seems to be very accurate in most guns in all the different calibers.  DP
