.357 Frame Question
« on: April 13, 2010, 12:10:14 PM »
I am sure this has been cussed & discussed before, but I'm not all that conversant with searching the archives to find it.  Which frame does the .357 come on, SB1 or SB2?  I ask because I am planning on getting one for my boy, but I want the option of adding other barrels later on if he wants to.

SB1. Only shotgun and 44 and 357 mag barrels can be fitted to this frame by H&R due to pressure restrictions.

2007 and older 357mags came on SB2 frames, they didn't start using SB1 frames until 2008.

Thanks for clearing that up Tim. I would personally try to find a used one so I could add accessory barrels if I wanted.

OK for  guys like me  tring to learn as much as we can.  Can a 357 or 44mag be installed on an SB2 from the factory or possible a do it yourself project?  Is there any barrel in 44mag that will work on my SB2 ?  Is an SB1 considered inferior in any way?

You or the factory can put a .357 mag or .44 Mag barrel on an SB2 frame as well as an SB1 frame as long as it is not to old. Cjeck the FAQ's for the years and corresponding serial number ranges. If you do it yourself you should be able to put those barrels on just about any SB1 or SB2 frame. Fitting info is also contained in the FAQ's....<><....:)

Is an SB1 considered inferior in any way?

The SB1 frame is cast iron, SB2 are heat treated investment cast alloy steel, much stronger than an SB1, but the SB1 is fine for comparatively lower pressure chamberings.  As MSP stated, all this is and a whole lot more are in the FAQs. ;)

Tim, MSP
Thanks for the feed back and reminding that about 90% of what I'm wanting to know about this new area in my shooting sports is in FAQ's and again thanks to all that have contributed putting all together. It's just so hard to stay away from that reply button :)

Tim

Is this correct?

I thought the older frames were SB1s? Have they started reusing older style frames? Sorry, but this is getting confusing to me and I've read the FAQs [or skimmed them].
What would a 'NR' prefix NEF/H&R frame be, or is that enough info?
Thanks for your patience.

Well, ya thought wrong, H&R has never offered any centerfire rifle barrel on an SB1 frame until 2008, the old H&R Inc prior to 1987(actually late 1986) never made SB1 frames, all were cast iron, but never SB1 designated, SB1/SB2 didn't happen until H&R1871 started making them.

See the build year list in the FAQs, NR is around 2002?

Ummm, here's more confusion....what's marked on the barrel means nothing now, many(most) current production SB1 357 and 44 mag barrels are marked SB2.  ::) The only real way to know what the frame is, is to compare it to the pics in the FAQs, the tang around the stock bolt threads of a modern SB2 frame is skeletonized, SB1s are solid. Some H&R Inc cast iron frames have a small hollow above (or below??) the stock bolt hole also.

Thanks to all who responded.  I was afraid that the new ones are SB1.  I might opt for a .30-30 and get the .357 barrel later.

good decision, if the option exists to purchase an SB1 or and SB2 to add barrels to in the future go with the SB2....<><....:)
