just a little peep hole.
« on: April 08, 2010, 07:58:13 PM »
Can someone tell me, is there some kinda special scope for a pistol??? how do these guys you see on TV look through a scoped pistol with their arms fully extended. I slipped a scope on my contender and I can`t get a focus if it`s more than 4 to 5  inches from my eye. I`m sure not gonna pull the trigger when it`s that close. I already have 1 scope beauty mark between the eyes, I`m not going for a matched set. If my arms are fully extended I just have a little hole not much bigger than the cross hairs, maybe a little over 3/8 of an inch round.  Thanks, Gary

There is a special kind of scope for pistol use.  The eye relief is much longer than a riflescopes.

Here's a link to a few.....http://www.midwayusa.com/browse/BrowseProducts.aspx?tabid=10&categoryid=11391&categorystring=657***

Becareful if you buy one of line. Some outfits are advertising handgun scopes, but when you read the spec's  ::)
I have seen some from 10"(for really short arms) out to 19".

Many people put red dots on handguns. Even "handgun" scopes do not let me extend my arms out like I want too with out the sight picture narrowing down. Just a reminder, if you are going to put what ever on a hard kicking handgun, it needs to be rugged, they get a lot of forces put on them. Some put 3 or even 4 rings on to keep the scope in place. I have seen long eye relief rifle scopes used on single shot pistols that do not kick real hard. They put one hand on the grip and the other hand over the scope to prevent it from recoiling/rolling back so bad.

i put a red dot on my .357 s&w tru glo the only times i had problems were
1 tryed to get a shot off while looking backwards over shoulder couldnt find the dot quickly
2 right at dark nice 6 point at maybe 9-10 yrds i could see horns, but the whole scope was giant red dot.
just what i had problems with but then again my eyes are not what they use to be.
but in the day light 75 yrds and a paper plate i can normally get 6 out of 6 in the plate.

Olydraft,  I have a weaver 2 power pistol scope that has the proper eye relief.  Of course as Graybeard has said many times forget the moving shots when using a scope on a pistol.  The pistol had a 2x6 bushnell pistol scope when I got it and I guess the 454 was too much for that one - the insides came loose after a while. After some checking around I got the 2X weaver on the advice of a seasoned pistolero and it has done ok.  bt

Olydraft, What caliber, distance and target are you shooting?
I have the 2 power Weaver on a 10" 22 Hornet Contender. I had a Tasco red dot on it for years. Depends on what you are using it for. I shot it the other day for the first time in years as I had a 23" 223 barrel on the frame. At 100 yds there wasn't much magnification and at 200, just popping w/holdover, some old 35 gr Vmax ammo for fun I hit close to a 1 gallon milk jug but didn't hit it in 5 trys. Standing, using patio door frame as a rest was not the best. Not much power in 2x but I don't think I could hold a higher power scope very steady. I put the red dot on a 10" 44 mag but don't think I've shot it yet. Don't know if the Tasco will hold up to the recoil of 44 mag. Good Luck!
Actually I didn't go out and look at the jug, only saw dust kick up around it. Maybe went through as water had drained half out from Winter. I'll look tomorrow.

I have an old style contender with a 10" 30/30 octagon barrel, I have a box of 150 gr winchester power points. I think before hunting season I`m going for something in a 14" to 16" barrel to tame things down a little. I`m definately leaning towards a red dot.... I forgot I`m shooting from 50 to 100 yds

Well guys I just bought a BSA RD30 red dot with 11 light levels. The guy at the local gun shop said it had a lifetime warranty and putting on a contender was no problem with durability. If it falls apart he said BSA would fix it or replace it and seeing how they don`t have any repair facilities it would be replaced. I`ve got it installed and bore sighted and ready to shoot.  Gary

That sounds like a fun shooter. Let us know how the scope holds up.
