Measuring Dovetails

Hello all

How do I go about measuring a dovetail?  The books that I have do not cover that detail, and the books I ordered are on their way, so those will not help me 'til later.

Right now I figure that I need the measurement of the dovetail at the top, the bottom, the height of the dovetail, and the degree of angle as well.  The first three are no problem, but I would like to know about the fourth, as well as get some confirmation as to what I should be measuring.

Also, if anyone knows of any books that cover the topic well, please let me know.

I think my best advice is to find a copy of that big, thick, green "Machinery Handbook"at your local library.  It will explain things like dovetail slots and their dimensions and give a good expanation of how they are made (with special dove-tail cutters for milling machines).  If you want, I can dig mine out and look it up.  Or.....just call Brownell's  1-800-741-0015 catalog #55 page 143, and just ask!

Thanks for the info .... I have to head over there tomorrow anyway as I am researching the gun that the dovetail question relates to (CIL Model 125 - see other thread), so I can find a thick green Machinery Handbook while I am at it.

PS .... I saw that little bugger, but getting items from Brownell's to Canada is a long, long process (at least for gun parts or anything that makes a gun work), so I will have to look at Canadian sources  :cry:

Shouldn't be a problem for non gun parts (cutters...........)
