Ketchup packets in the glove box with blued guns
« on: January 25, 2010, 03:57:30 AM »
Beaware of putting your blued handgun in your glove box with ketchup packets in there too.  I've witnessed the ketchup packet breaking open and eating the bluing off the metal on the handgun.  It didn't take but a short time.

We all do it, saving extra straws, ketchup, salt and pepper in our glove boxes. I don't put handguns in there anymore.

No actually we don't "all do it". I for one do neither. You'll find no ketchup, straws or napkins in my glove box. You'll also find no guns in there. Perhaps I'm the exception to the rule but trust me "we don't all do it".

As an added note both ketchup/catsup and BBQ sauce are almost instant death to bluing on firearms. Dad found that out the hard way dang near 55 years ago I guess it must have been when BBQ sauce spilled on his old Colt Challenger after a fish fry. I suspect mustard wouldn't be very kind either.

No, sorry, but I don't have any of that stuff in my glove box.

I suppose it is the acids from the tomato that takes the blueing off.  Mustard would do the same b/c there is vinegar in it.  Lets just say you should not have condiments with your protection.

Something else to watch out for is the light . Had a S&W compact 45 in my glovebox and some how the box got shut in day light and the switch for the light got knocked so the light would not go out . Next morning when I got in I noticed the light and checked the gun was touching the light and the gun had a nice spot that had turnned brown and within hours was rust.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Salt packets also suck moisture out of the air like a sponge.
I do sometimes forget to get my ammo out of the glove box
and one little salt packet turned several rifle cartridges a nice
color of green in a matter of one saturday to the next.

Its a good thing to keep in mind if your going to reblue a gun and strip off the orginal bluing, it works and i seen it work.

I keep the packets with liquid inside in the ash-tray.
Straws, plastic forks, napkins do go in the glove box.

On a hot sweaty day while traveling i find it hard to keep my gun on.  I have heard about our body sweat can tarnish the stainless finishes.  I had it happen too.  You need to wipe down the s/s finish often.  If the s/s gets tarnished using simichrome polish with a soft cloth will bring it back to its orginal condition.

When i was packing my 1911 i carried 7 mags in my pocket,  1 mag in the 1911 and a 50rd box of ammo in the glove box.  I figured the 8 mags would get me to the truck.  This was many years ago when i was night fishing and soon after a night fisherman was stabbed near boston.  I figured it wasn't safe so i packed more ammo.  Now i carry a CZ82 in 9mm mak with two 12rd mags.

One night i had a guy tell me he was going to slap me and take my motorcycle while i was getting gas one night.  There was a car full of guys my age being stupid and drunk.  Of course i had my redhawk in 44mag on and i never responded.  All i could think of was make my day.

The stupid people we run into at times.  The full moon nights are the worst.

While pumping gas as a kid i had a lady drive up with a barking dog and she asked me what would i do if she let the dog out of the car on me. I had the gas nozzle in my hand and a cigarette lighter in the other.   The look on her face was that I insulted her.

no dogs or ketchup but blood will ruin a bluing job right NOW. It strips the bluing immediately and will rust in just hours.

This thread reminds me of a Jeff Foxworthy joke.

Set my Springy Ultra Compact on a newspeper that was midly damp from vinegar. Looks like camo, in wrong colors. Love this pistol
