The more the merrier!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: November 13, 2003, 06:49:26 PM »
I read this reply in a thread early this morning:

Quote
I won't even pretend to know what these other guys know and tend to stay away from giving advice since they are better qualified for that when it comes to trap placement, bedding and trap adjusting/modifying. More then likely the advice given so far is what you need to know but one thing worth checking comes to mind...at least for me and my area.

...and its been rolling around in my head all day.  So before I cut my thumb off tomorrow thinking on it more I'll say my mind.  I wish more guys would jump in.  Really, that's what a forum is (a place to discuss things and exchange ideas) right?  I hope I've not intimidated any, if so I didn't mean to.

It is just almost impossible to predict where useful information will come form.  Many of us use very different methods and trap for different motives.  What works for one may not work for another.  Likewise what we use and understand is limited by our expereinces.  We all can benefit from each others input.  Don't bet that some of the old guys will have the best answer or even the correct answer.  If you have an idea post it.  I doubt that any on this forum will jump at you even if they disagree.

By the way the deer issue and sprung traps (the rest of the post I quoted above) is avery valid point.  Every time it happens to me I look in the bushes near by figurin to see a deer dead of a heart attack :-D

couldn't agree more.
lot of wisdom in the older, experienced advice given...but not all of it is gold stuff either. I've thrown a very small percentage of stuff out the window myself as bunk and/or old wive's tales...but lion's share of information is based on tried, true experiences and if it worked for them, then at least give it an honest try yourself. Might be one happy camper that you did. I believe we all have an obligation to help each other out, and if someone asks for advice, generally they really are looking for advice or else they wouldn't have asked for it anyway. If they get opposing views, they get opposing views. What works for one trapper, may not work for another. There are just too many variables in what we do, where we live, what we use for equipment, etc. etc. etc. but the knowledge base gained through sharing information in media formats such as this are just plain valueable.
that's why we all strive to build "better mousetraps", right???

I agree with both the above posts- but want to add- If yo udon't know, don't say that you do.

Opinions are one thing- but don't portray something as "fact" unless it is.

If that is the worst that is rolling in your head and bothering you...tell me how to get pink trucks, stetson hats, burros, the whole sniffing beaver castor ordeal and many other things out of my head.   That stuff brings a chuckle out of me out of the blue when I am trapping when I should be concentrating on trapping!!   :)

Seriously though, trappnman says it best for me with his reply... "but want to add- If yo udon't know, don't say that you do.

Opinions are one thing- but don't portray something as "fact" unless it is."

I am not in his,  your's or many other's league on this forum.    I am a hobby trapper at best as I fit it in around work and use my vacation time for trapping.  In fairness to the one asking questions and respect for the one's who have put in the time and know best...most times it is better to let the pro's answer.  Granted I still do post hair brained ideas every once in a while but I try to keep it to a minimum and have been pretty good this year.

Sure hope you don't think I was pickin at you TJKIFD, cause I wasn't.  It seems that there are many that visit and don't post their thoughts.  I believe that you articulated many of their feelings and I just wanted to make certain that the OLD FARTS weren't scarin them off; and no I'm not that old :-D  :-D.  You know we come here to congregate with those of the same ilk, help others, teach the new comers,  get a bit rowdy (well a least that goes for RdFx and Rascal) and most of all learn from each other.

If we get more guys on here postin,  maybe the boobsy twins (RdFx and that danged ole Rascal) will quit pickin on me.  Heck not only to they routinely hurt my feeling they up and break it from time to time.

One thing I want to point out- the only difference between a good hobby trapper and a pro trapper is that due to circumstances, whatever, the pro is able to trap the whole season.   I am a pro trapper in that i trap for money both during fur season and out- BUT- I ain't making super catches- I'm just out there every day- and when trapping is your #1 consideration, the numbers take care of themselves.

No problem.   I know you weren't picking on me.  Just stating why I wrote what I did.  I would love to know enough to give out advice freely but at the rate I'm going I will be older then dirt before that happens.  You know...10 years from how old RdFX is now if all the stuff you say about him is true.      :D   There that should make you feel better on the grief getting.  Would comment on Rascal just for you but would dread the feeling I would get ever time I heard a 4-wheeler roaring about thinking he ain't afraid of putting miles on it to get me!!

Have a good one.

Valid point WQ. Many people in certain places will jump on people for posting an idea they disagree with. Can't say that it will make a new person want to return.
I think it is ok to respectfully disagree, but not to jump on someone most of the time.

MY OPINION
OK!!  Now I am all fired up!
Now you are going to get it!!
I thought about what has been said in this thread and felt the need to reply!  Granted, it is just my opinion and not necessarily fact.

WQ makes a valid point (you know, the one about "rolling around in my head").  What rolls around in his head is ROCKS.  When he tilts his head sideways, one occasionally rolls out his ear.

Jim-NE:  If you are looking for wisdom, you need look no further than my email address.  I am the most wise of all.  I have a crystal ball that tells me all and I can pass that on to you if you wish.

T-man:  Since my opinion is all that counts, I will try and remember to add that to my postings.   :P

TJF:  Here is the facts:  1. Pink Trucks are an indication of a professional beaver trapper.  2. Stetson Hats are worn by Cowboys, Trappers, Goat farmers, Burro ranchers, and are good at weddings. 3. Burros are the most underrated animal on earth.  Jesus even rode one.   4. Sniffing beaver castor is a great medicinal healing agent!  5. NO ONE is in my league- I tried to get them to join but they didn't like bowling.  6.  Hobby trappers are rare--you should feel blessed.  Trapping "hobbies" takes an extraordinary skill that most of us do not have.

Here are some more facts:
WQ has a limited vocabulary which causes him to use such phrases as :  "bobbsy twins" or was that "boobsy twins"-- "OLD FARTS" (most farts don't hang around long enough to become old- well except in his case) -- "hurt my feelings" Lord, give us a break!  We all know he has no feelings.

EVERYONE SHOULD LEAVE rdfx ALONE!!!

Now in the immortal words of (dang, I forget his immortal name) : CAN'T WE ALL JUST BE FRIENDS???

TJF:  I'll be singing "OOOHHHHKLAHOMA".  If you hear that, you know to run and hide.
Here is what I will be riding.

OH BY THE WAY, NOTICE I LEFT NO PLACE FOR THE FUR I CATCH ON MY RIDE?  It isn't hard to carry my catch.

Rascal's got crystal balls???
Isn't it difficult to keep them from chipping while he is running around on those "new legs"? And, doesn't the clacking noise scare all the game away when he runs through the woods on those legs?

RdFx;
You have to excuse the WQ.  He has not been a well person for a week or so.  He's all mad because he can't catch a possum.   :P

Hanging on the fence-- Nope!  I wish I could afford the MB650's but not this year.  Those seen in the pic are some new  1 3/4 Duke offsets.  More hanging on the fence but not in the pic were some #2 & #3 DBLS as well as some 1 1/2 cs and some monty #2 & 3.  A few #4 DBLS.  Can't legally use coni's here so beaver have to get the dbls. Sure am anxious to get them all out!   Can't wait till Dec. 1.  Went ahead and set 4 coyote sets this week and can't keep the dadblasted coon, possum, and skunks out of them.  So far, only one good coyote and one mangy one. Come next Monday, I will set heck out of some brushy and low areas next to the river and maybe keep the "junk" out of my good sets.  Very strong winds and heavy rain last night & early this am didn't help much.  This morning was pretty rough checking the sets in the blowing rain.  LOVED IT!!!  GOD I LOVE TRAPPING!!!  Even the worst of days trapping (weatherwise) is better than the best of days if not trapping.  My sets weren't to badly damaged by the rain since I knew this was coming and used wax paper and bedded in really tight.  Only one set messed up and that was because there was a coon in it    He was a muddy mess but got him turned loose and sent on his way.

Don't you know that crystal changes to brass?  This am it was brass.  The only thing is that when crystal changes it's compostion to brass, a lot of shrinkage occurs.

Oh...that's what that was. Snow was flying this morning, it was Sunday, and I swore I heard church bells ringing down through the woods. The brass thing makes much more sense now.
How's your season going?
I might actually get a shot a putting out a few sets this weekend (Holiday weekend). Got a beaver damage call last week...and I can't sit inside staring out the window any longers. Getting caught back up with work again so if I don't get off my duff and do something about the cabin fever I'll really kick myself later.

Jim-Ne;
Season hasn't started here yet and been way to warm.  High yesterday of about 75 degrees. Weatherman calling for upper 20's tonight and then starting to warm back up into the 60's by mid week.  Man, I sure wish it would turn cold.  Of course, cold here means 40's in the day.  Would probably feel like spring time to you.
