Remington Double Rifle 30-06?
« on: April 23, 2008, 02:47:15 PM »
Has anyone had a chance to actually shoot one of these?  They look good especially for the money.

Sherppa
based on my experience it will be hit or miss.

The Baikal 12/.30-06 was fantastic, the gun was regulated perfectly.  The Spartan (remington label for Baikal) in 12/.223 was regulated so poorly and the importer EAA could not regulate the gun correctly. Remington refunded me my purchase price.

THere are other posts from members who love the Baikal double rifle in the O/U configuration.

Just remember you can not adjust the windage on these guns.

Good luck
Doug

Baikal = great
Spartan = CRAP

That is my view, any ideas as to why that is?  Spartan = Baikal rebranded for Remington from the same factory.

I actually own one of these(Baikal) and my only complaint when I first got it was the stock. Stocks comb was so high I couldn't get a sight picture. Had a local stock maker, who works stocks for some very expensive African doubles, cut the comb down about 3/4" at the butt and 5/8" near the action. Now, it works great and I've gotten some very impressive groups with cheap milsurp ammo(read 3/8" at 25 yards, common whitetail ranges for Illinois)? To answer your question, yes I believe them very capable of good accuracy.

I own two of these, one SxS and one O/U. Have never shot the O/U yet.

Not quite sure why people keep on saying the regulation is either on or off as you regulate the rifle yourself. Very simple process as I have tried no less than 5 different loads in mine and last time out 2 shots from each barrel went into a circle under 1 1/2 inches at 50 yards. Comb is to high to use the standard iron sights, and to low to use a scope. Added one of those leather pads to the stock and now it fits me perfectly lining up the red dot that is on it.

Where else can you get a SxS 30 06 double rifle that you can regulate to the load you want to use for $600 (O/U's were a lot cheaper) and that only weighs about 6 1/2 pounds (estimated)?

Current load is the 220 grain Hornady soft points running out as a estimated 2,400 fps. I would use this load on anything that walked in the USA. Soon I'll have the triggers fixed and the automatic safety deactivated and the rifle will be perfect.

Oh, if you think they are junk, try to find a used SxS for what most of us paid for them new, $600 range. Also own a Chapuis, Searcy, and a Valmet 412. None of them are more accurate than this rifle.

Snowwolfe, would love to have the triggers done on mine also but, feel I can live with what came from manufacterer if I must. Who's doing your triggers?
The more I handle this little rifle the more I believe it to be a perfect Wisconsin/Missouri deer rifle.

I haven't even seen these for sale in a long time.  I thought they quit importing them.

Ted, Remington no longer sells them under their name but, I think an outfit in a southern state still imports and sells them? Do a web search and possible you'll find them under new distributors?

I saw one on gunbroker today.  Buy it now was $1,200, not sure what the reserve price was.  There was another made by New European American Armory that was identical to the remington for $735.  Other than that, I haven't really looked for one of these in a while.

Ted, from what I've read on net Baikal is a good one but, have been warned other brands are lacking in quality? Look on other threads here on GBO about these guns to get others opinions about these guns? I know there's been a couple of threads here at the double gun forum. Think I was lucky enough to get one of the last Remington offered? Just about procrastinated too long. Best of luck with this.

I am having a local smith do the triggers. Not expecting them to be perfect. If he can remove 75% of the creep and lighten then to about 5-6 pounds I'll be a happy camper.

The reason you see them going on Gunbrokers now for $1,200 and up is because shooters are finally trying them out instead of listening to people who never actually owned one claiming they are junk. A key give away is when a shooter claims the rifles are regulated poorly. The regulation wheel is under the forearm.
I put this scope mount on mine:
http://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/Leapers_Accushot_1_Pc_Mount_w_1_Rings_High_11mm_Dovetail/636

The recoil of the 06 with full power loads is pretty brisk but have had zero problems with the mount or Ultradot.

If you are expecting these rifles to be built as good as a custom double then you will be disappointed. They are what they are, inexpensive, poor wood to metal fit, horrible triggers. But man can they shoot if you play with the regulation.

Two barrels of 220 gr Hornady round nosed bullets at 2,400 fps is about perfect for this little rifle. Load 180's if you dont need the deeper penetration.

teddy12b, try this link and maybe we'll get lucky, they are the last ones I heard of handling these rifles?

Doug, I think Spartan is just a Remington marketing title for Baikal? Same gun I believe?

I appreciate the links, but my interest in the double barrel rifles just isn't there anymore.  I think they're a great idea, but only one company is making them and it's too much of a hassle.  I went the other direction last December and bought a remington 750 in 30-06.  That's the rifle that's going hunting this year.
