.308 XCR Compact Tactical
« on: December 23, 2009, 06:08:31 PM »
HI

Anyone own, or have shot the Xcr Comapct tactical.  Just trying to figure out accuracy level to expect and best load for it. I have one on the way in .308.  Thanks for any help.
God bless
Andy

Andy, typically that rifle will outshoot most of the people who are driving it.  Your best load for it will be a handload, but if you do not reload try FGMM and Black Hills 168gr and 175gr loads.  You should have a sub MOA performer there, but skim bedding the action in the stock and taking the trigger down some will help to improve consistancy/accuracy.

What kind of glass are you putting on it?

Thanks for the reply.  I'm not sure yet I have a VX-III 6.5-20x50 I think I'll send to the custom shop and have target turrets for it.
God bless
Andy :)

I have the Model 700™ SPS Tactical , x-mark trigger, and I swapped the Hogue stock (POS!) with a Bell and Carleson stock.  The gun shoots sub moa 5 shot groups at 100 yds with Federal 180 gr Noslar Partitions.  My gun did not like the lighter rounds at all.

The model you are looking at is a couple of steps above mine.  Should be just as good as mine or better since it has a better trigger and a better OEM stock

The gun should easily be a below half moa gun, I have a 700 vtr with a 24 inch unported barrel and my groups are below half moa first one was .470, the load I have found that has shot the best so far has been a hornady 168gr. hpbt match on top of 42.0 grains of IMR 4895. I haven't had time to run it through the chrono yet to see what it's accually doing for velocity but hey it shoots good. Hope this has helped.

I saw an interview on police snipers and most are set up to shoot 60 yards.
The short thick barrel tends to aid in accuracy as the arrel does not have as much flex and the longer the barrel the more the flex and the larger the group.
As I have stated before most rifles are more accurate than the shooters.
Do you want it as a hunting, target, plinker, or Varmint rifle.
I was thinking of one in 308 and a fixed 6X scope as a hunting rifle.

If there were factory Remington rifles that were consitantly expected to shoot half MOA for around $1K, then custom rifle makers would be out of a job.

I have a 700 LTR in .308, fantastic rifle. As far as I can tell the XCR Tactical is the same gun in a green stock (the LTR stock is black). Mine has been tuned up a little, beeding, lapped lugs, trigger tune and is a very consistent shooter. It will shoot 5 into an inch if I do my part, 3 often go into 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch.

I've got an SPS Tactical that averages .503 MOA for (5) five-shot groups with handloads.  Nice find, and a joy to shoot, but not the norm.  This was after I bedded it in a McM A5 stock and took the trigger down.  It was also only holding MOA with FGMM ammo, and I figured I'd barely be able to get it better.

Love McMillan and Manners stocks, have had a few of them.  Also, I'm a bit less enthused with MK4 scopes than I once was.

I also have a SPS tactical, 20" 308.  Recently it shot the Fed gold medal ammo, the 168 gr Match king, into a 3 shot group of slightly more than 0.5 at 100yds.  It also liked a couple of handloads.  These were using the Sierra 150 gr SPT, LC brass, WLR, and varget powder.  One load was 44.5 and the other was 43.1.  Its groups for these were in the 0.45 to 0.6 " 3 shot at 100 yds.  I also remember it liked the same bullet and brass with 43.4 of Re15 with about the same grouping.
Only thing I've done to the gun is adjust the trigger to about 2.5 lbs.  Factory hogue stock with a bushnell 4200 scope on it.  No bedding work or anything.

The SPS Tactical is a solid half moa shooter right out of the box with good ammo.
The stock on these rifles is way wimpy on the fore end ,so when shooting off the bench keep the rest well back away from the
end of the stock. This seems to help groups quite a lot as you can see in the picture the group on the right was shot with the
fore arm rested just far enough behind the sling studs to keep it from interfering with recoil. It almost looks like to different groups in that
one target.  On the left target I rested the fore arm about mid way between the stud and the mag plate. As you can see it was laying down a good group until I Murphied  the trigger. I would have blamed it on the wind but I take pride in the fact that I might goof up a lot of stuff but I'm pretty good at doping the breeze. ;D  At this point the rifle was right out of the box with a Burris 4.5x14 scope.
The load I picked as a starting point the rifle does not care for 150s not sure why. On a whim I also loaded up some Barnes 110gr X bullets
and some BLC2 and shot 5 groups all were sub moa with a.602 for the best.
