7.62x39 barrel

I was wondering about this chambering to add to my .22lr and .357 mag barrels.    i was thinking it would be like a 30 herrett.

As long as you dont try to shoot wolf ammo in it

The primers are too hard

At least that was my experience

I recently had MGM build me a Super 16 barrel in 7.62 x 39 for my Contender. They'll put either a .308 or .311 bore in it. I opted for the .311 as I planned on shooting the Russian ammo such as Wolf in it. While it won't drive tacks at 100 yards it'll shoot a 2 inch group at that range with any cheap Russian ammo I put in it. I'm well pleased with it. Also all the Wolf shot just fine in mine. No misfires.

I have a 12" with a .308 bore that will drive tacks (Bullberry)!  However, it's a handloader only since it has the .308 bore, no factory ammo allowed.  If you have one built, I would recommend the .308 bore since there are so many different 30 caliber bullets available to the handloader.  As a "wildcat" with a .308 bore, it's a fantastic little cartridge.  Most reloading die sets come with both a .308 and .310 expander button, so you can load for either bore.

If you're not a handloader, I wouldn't recommend this chambering at all, you'll probably be dissapointed if you want it to shoot cheap ammo.  Also, the factory ammo that is available is on the borderline of being too much for the Contender frame.  The pressures of the little 7.62x39 cartridge can get on up there on the C.U.P. scale.

Tried .308 bullets in a .311 bore in a Ruger M77 bolt action.  Terrible!  It will shoot the .310's and .311's very nicely.  I had a Ruger Mini30 that shot .308's pretty good, not great, but the Ruger Mini30 has a "choked" bore that allows you to shoot either diameter bullet.

I''ve heard (not experienced) that the Russian rifles don't particularly care which diameter bullet you shoot, they are awful either way!   ;D

Just kidding!  I wouldn't mind having an AK-47 just to have one to add to the closet!

I've read at least two articles claiming excellent accuracy with .308 Sierra jhps out of a .310-.311" bore. I've not tried it myself as I have .310" bullets meant for the 7.62x39. They are not hard to find and even Sierra offers a 150 gr bullet in .311" I believe. Sierras have thin jackets and possibly obturate the bore better if top loads are used [?].
I've not loaded enough for my only 7.62x39 I now have, a CZ 527. I used to load a good bit for an SKS that was very accurate.
I think the 7.62x39 is a fun round and a good 'deer and under' sized game round.

Just bought one from a member here (great folks here btw)
I am very excited to try this round as others have stated as a handload.
I will be using 308 (the bore of my barrel as the TC barrels are).
I will be calling it the poor mans 300 whisper!

I am not sure how "lazy" or "poor" we are to hand-load this when you could buy surp loads for much cheaper... well used to be able to!
 in my rushed response forgot to mention I am using a 15" barrel on an Encore frame.

Is the .308" bore version of a 7.62x39 called a "30x39"? I believe I've seen it called by this name.

It's just that I've shot the cartridge for so long that I can't get over calling it 7.62x39.

3 grains of Red Dot with a 180 grain cast lead bullet.
2 or 3 grains of Bullseye works great too with the same bullet.

Dezynco" I'm with you, cast all the way, those would be some nice plinking loads, although I think I would load a little heavier. I'm in the process of buying a 10" 7.62X39. fIt has a 308 bore. Also the custom TC barrel maker that I'm buying it from said go head shoot 311 factory loads just don't shoot steal cases in it. The high end CUP for the 7.62X39 is around 42,000 and the 223 is almost 52.000 so I do agree with him.

With 3.7 grains Red Dot and the RCBS 30-180, I shot 20 rounds through a 1" raggedy hole at 50 yards.  Drops a lot at 100 yards and starts to scatter a bit.  3" is the best I could do at 100 yards, but I didn't plan to use that load for any long distance shooting.  I seated the bullet as far out as possible without actually contacting the rifling.  I shot them "as dropped from the mold" and tumble lubed with wheel weight alloy.

Looked a little funny - the RCBS 30-180 is nearly as long as the case!
