Good friend of mine has one and it is the one gun he will keep, if it ever comes to that.

I have one in the 30-30/12 ga configuration and really like it!
Some people put scopes on them with see thru mounts. I have thought about doing that but really like the speed of just bringing the gun up and the sights seem to be ready to go!
Some people really take advantage of being able to reload the spitzer bullets and getting performance in the .300 Savage range with the 30-30 barrel.

I have the 30-30 over 20, one of the black plastic stock ones, not wood.  It is high on my list for "only one gun".  I puty a cheap Red Dot on mine.  You can see under it just enough to see the regular sights if needed.  It takes grouse during elk season, giving me both needed barrels at once.  The 12 would be a bit better, if I ever see one.  Sometimes I wish for .243??????????

I just purchased a 30-30/12 and I am replacing the plastic stocks with wooden ones.  I plan on setting the irons for the 30-30, seeing how it prints with the 12 ga and then placing a 1.5-5x20 on a set of see through rings that I will dial in for the 22 insert I picked up for it.  It is going to be my dedicated walking through the woods gun when squirrel, rabbit, grouse, pheasant, turkey and deer are in season together.  Took me awhile to find it but finaly a guy had one just sitting in his safe and decided it needed to go to a new home where it would get more love.

I owned a older savage 30-30 over 20ga. for a while. These are actually nice guns. Only problems are they are usually not regulated very well and they are heavy.

For my use I like the 20ga shotgun barrel better than the 12. JMO

I have a 30-30 20ga. To me it is easier to carry than a shotgun and a pistol. Yes it is on the heavy side but it sure is nice to have the combination of a rifle and a shotgun. When it gets too heavy to carry , I will use golf cart or a Grandkid to carry it  ;D

I have one of the synthetic stocked 12ga/.30-30's.

I have see-thru rings and a 1.5-5x Tasco EXP scope.

I have Carlson choke tubes for riffled slugs, steel shot & turkey loads. All the chokes extend about 3/4" past the barrel muzzle.

I've also installed a Pachymyer Decelerator recoil pad (the stock pad cracked due, I assume, to using heavy 3" shotgun loads).

I also have an MCA chamber adapter so I can shoot 32 pistol rounds through the .30-30 rifle barrel.

I'm using Hornady LEVERevolution 160 gr ammo for the extra power & velocity it offers (it's flatter trajectory isn't something I need).

I don't think that I've ever made a shot with it at over 75 yards (and most have been at much shorter distances).

Yes, it's not the lightest gun around, but I really appreciate the weight whenever I use a 3" high power turkey load, or the 1-3/8 oz full power Remington Buckhammer slugs. Boy do they kick so much more than the .30-30 does!!

Okay; not everyone appreciates it's 'industrial' looks, but it simply shrugs off living outside in sub-zero weather for days/weeks on end, being dried by campfires, getting submerged during canoe portages, or any other abuse I can devise for it & me to endure.

I often winter camp using a tarp and more than once I've woken up to find it buried under 6" of snow. Brush it off, go find breakfast.

Downsides? Well, I hunt solo from a 52 lb Kevlar canoe, and the 'kick' from a 3" shell can rock it a fair bit (I try not to take broadside shots, but the waterfowl don't always indulge me).

Improvements? Well, a swing away scope mount would be nice, and I'd also like molded in shell holders in the stock (I'm just weird).

Would I buy another one? Setting aside my comments below, in a heartbeat!

Based on what they are currently changing hands for, mine has appreciated in value about 5 times! Not a bad gun investment at all.

But, planning for a future move, I'd like a bit more power than the .30-30 offers (I've started a few threads around this very issue).

I'd gladly pay a fairly significant sum for a equally indestructible combo gun with a 3" chambered 12ga (that had screw in chokes) mated to a 'bigger' .30 caliber rimmed cartridge with the rifle barrel on TOP of the shotgun barrel (not UNDER it).

But no firearms manufacturer evidently seems to think such a combo gun setup can be made to function reliably/long term.

However, I recently saw a Valmet 412 .308 double rifle with the TOP barrel re-chambered to .300 Win Mag on Gunbroker; so I perhaps my desired configuration isn't as troublesome as many seem to make out.

Best regards,

Steve

Valmet didn't chamber that bbl., and i personally wouldn't want it, as i assure you the pressures are too high on a 300 Win. Mag...

That would be another mistake, as O/U guns handle the high pressures MUCH better when they are in the bottom bbl...  And, that's why the Valmets have the rifles on the bottom.

I bought the Mod 24F, 30/30-12ga about 10 yrs ago thinking it could be the perfect hunting tool. I was never satisfied with the performance. The 2 barrels were so far off that one sighting system was useless. The guy that mentioned a scope with see thru mounts had the right idea but I've never liked that set up. I sent it back once cause the POI at 50yds was more than a foot apart. tehy insisted it was a good as it could be so I sold it. Love the concept but hated the gun.

I had the old 24V 20 guage. I would have loved to have had the interchangable chokes the new ones do, or even had a modified choke instead of full.

I reloaded for the 30-30 and that made it very versetile. A 130 gr pointy bullet in a 30-30 is a pretty practical load. For most big game I used Lymans 31141 bullet 175 gr, and loaded to the full velocity of a jacketed bullet. I also loaded a 120 gr lead bullet with about 3 gr of Unique for small game. The load shot to the sights at 25 yards without adjusting them.

I shot with the iron sights so that I could use the shotgun without adjusting my mind. They worked good enough at 30-30 ranges.

I have a "Staggs built" 20 gauge/30-30 and the 30-30 barrel is on the bottom   Hammerless, 2 triggers, I like it very much.  Can't seem to find a scope mount for it though.

I still regret passing up a Staggs Built maybe thirty years ago. It is the only one I ever saw and the price was very good but I was really pinched for cash at the time so I walked away. As I said, I still regret it. It was a WAY better built gun than the Savage.

while i dont have one i always wanted one. i have one set up (in my head) that has a low power variable scope for the rifle barrel and one of those small red dots on top of the rear scope ring or possibly at a 45 degree angle so you just have to rotate the gun to the side a bit when its on your shoulder ive seen some ar15 set up like this for 3 gun comps. anyways seems like it would work preety well
