25-06 Handi
« on: April 29, 2010, 10:28:55 AM »
I am looking for a real accurate load for my Handi 25-06, using a 100 to 120 grain hunting bullet. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Welcome aboard Jim! I've never handloaded for my 25-06 since it shoots 3 different factory loads so well out of the box with the first couple rounds touching or real close to it, these are all 115gr-120gr loads, so that's what I'd recommend for bullet choice, Nosler 115gr partition, Hornady 117gr BTSP and Rem 120gr Core-Lokts. Take a good look at the Handi Basics 101 sticky as well as the accurizing tips in the FAQs, you may already have a good load, just aren't shooting the Handi armed with the proper knowledge, it's not a matter of just pulling the trigger, there are some simple details that will make them shoot well, trigger pull, a clean and dry latch/shelf, closing the action properly, full length resizing and forend fit all make a big difference for starters.  ;)

I have found the 120 grain remington corelokts to shoot well. I am still working with handloads but they are lighter than what you request. My loads with the 115 grain NBT did not do well. I loaded from min to max in half grain increments and played with seating depth and just couldnt get what I wanted. I think switching powder may change that however I am trying to stick with a "universal" powder (just one that I happen to use with a few of my other cals). I did pick up some 100gr hp I am going to play with but that may not be quite what you are looking for. What type of hunting is it you are targeting with the 25-06? I have mine set up for rock chucks and yotes so I will share what info I have tried for loads if that is your target.

The .25-06 is an overbore cartridge, one of the oldest wildcats of the .30-06 parent cartridge.  My notes tell me that my son's Ruger 77 likes the 117 Sierra GameKing over 50.0 grains of Reloder 22 powder.  It might go a little faster with more powder, but it's shooting into 0.7" at 100 yards.

It's a great cartridge.  Enjoy!
