GOOD COMEBACK LINE ON GUN SAFETY
« on: April 28, 2010, 08:26:22 PM »
Thought I'd share this email I got awhile back. Hope you enjoy it as much as me.     :)

General Cosgrove was interviewed on the radio recently.
Love his reply to the lady who interviewed him concerning guns and children. Regardless of how you feel about gun laws you gotta love this! This is one of the best comeback lines of all time. It is a portion of an ABC interview between a female broadcaster and General Cosgrove who was about to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting his military headquarters.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
So, General Cosgrove, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?

GENERAL COSGROVE:
We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery and shooting.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?

GENERAL COSGROVE:
I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?

GENERAL COSGROVE:
I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
But you're equipping them to become violent killers.

GENERAL COSGROVE:
Well, Ma'am, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you?

The radio went momentarily silent and the interview ended.

As much as I love the commentary, as with all chain emails, it's just not true.  http://www.hoax-slayer.com/cosgrove-female-interviewer.shtml  Sorry to be the d!ck on this one.

You didn't beat me by much, PA.  This has been floating around for a few years.  Good story.  And likely there is some little truth, say a reporter going off about training kids to be killers, or maybe a letter to the editor on that subject, and it has been 'enhanced' over time.

Please, people, before you pass on an email like this, take a few minutes to check it out.  Pass it on as a story, not as fact, if you are unsure. WE have to take the high road and be calm and factual.  If we pass on things that the antis can jump on as lies, or inaccurate, we loose.

PASingleshot;  Thanks for the info. It would have been nice if it included a comment from Gen. Cosgrove though. The, "unfair tarnishing", of his reputation seemed to be more the opinion of Hoax-Slayer than it being an international incident or scandal. I hope the General's feelings were not hurt by this. Trying to paint the picture of this as being  overtly sexist and inflamatory is just missing the point. It's more about teaching people at a young age personal responsibility and safety with firearms, which in that same vain should carry over into all aspects of life. Just because a kid has the equipment to kill someone doesn't mean he will. Just because a woman has the equipment to be a prostitute doesn't mean she will. It's about education and mentoring. Maybe the woman,(fictional or not), in this story got an education from the General's,(fictional or not), statement/question. Or maybe she just ran home and called the ACLU.
I'm glad you brought this information to our attention. It wouldn't be right to give Gen. Cosgrove credit where credit isn't due.
I like the story anyway..... Thanks again for the heads up on this!!

I thought there was a similar remark made by Patton. I may be wrong.
Thanks Don.

Well, I liked the story whether it was factual, or not.  I don't come here with any hope of getting the gospel truth anyway.  This is the Internet and what you learn here has got to be taken with a grain of salt.  It's entertainment for Pete's sake.  If I wanted to get the real, straight truth I'd tune into CNN, or MSNBC--right?
