Leave the buckshot for something thin skinned thats easier to kill like a burglar.    I have tried it and taken two small hogs with buckshot and lost a number of others.  I do not recommend buckshot for hogs, period.  Now if you can place the slug behind the hogs ear, or quartering away, behind the shoulder, then it can kill a very large hog.  BUT,  if you take a behind the shoulder shot with a slug,  you may not get an exit on a very large hog,  not sure,  but don't expect a lot of blood to follow through the woods.  If you can wait and take the neck shot behind the ear, you shouldn't have much trouble dropping even large hogs.  If you are not a crack chot with that slug gun,  then I would recommend that you use something that you can shoot very accurately.  A wounded hog can become an abgry hog very quickly and when they are engry they can become very aggressive, and when that happens,  you could be in trouble.

I agree, buckshot is for bucks (otherwise they would call it Hogshot )

But seriously, I have literally seen buckshot size 00 from a 12 gauge at about 20 yards and a full chock bounce off of a hog.  In fact, it got him really mad.  He took off and we never found him.

I recently aquired a smoothbore, rifled sight barrel for my Rem 870 mag action. I am going to try the reduced load 2 3/4" slugs in 12 ga for the piggies. I maybe wrong in my thinking but don't think I will need 3"mag slugs or the full load 2 3/4" sluggers. The reduced load 12 ga runs about 1250 fps. I will limit my shots to 50yds also. Any opinions??

Don't use reduced loads in your 12 gauge slug gun -  Use magnum loads.

I consider 50 yards to be relatively long shots for hogs, especially the bigger ones.  I'm not an advocate of 12 gauge slugs for hogs, but they can work well if you don't ask too much of them.  Use the most powerful loads you can find in the 12 gauge. (Of course make sure that you can hit where you aim.  Shot placement is just as important as power.)

Guys listen,  buckshot is not for hogs!  Now I've killed hogs with it, small hogs, well under 100#, and seen more run off even though hit, up fairly close.  I rececntly found a complete hog skeleton in the swamp on my lease.  Looking at the skull I found a small hole over the left eye socket.  Insided the hole was a piece of lead.  Hmmm, how did it get there?  From a 12 ga 3" mag OO buckshot round, fired from MY shotgun.   That hog obviously died from it's wounds,  but not where I could recover it.  Now if all you want to do is  kill hogs,  have at it,  you will no doubt kill some.  But if you want to kill and eat those hogs,  leave the shotgun for birds, rabbits, etc.. and go with a centerfire rifle, or handgun of adequate caliber.   Buckshot is soft lead, thats why it doesn't give the penetration needed.  Deer are soft bodied animals, easy to penetrate, Hogs are not.   markc :?
