Sighting options for Guide Gun
« on: November 29, 2003, 01:35:21 PM »
I have been looking at different options for sights on my guide gun.  There sure are a lot of choices, scope, peep. tang, holosight and of course the original open sight.

This gun will be used in the woods deer hunting, Texas hog hunt and maybe someday a black bear hunt, using a stand.

I've owned the same Guide Gun since the 1895Gs first came out. At first I usd the factory iron sights, OK but that's it. Switched to a Williams peer sight. Better but not great. Then I put a Leupold 1X4 on it. That's been there ever since and I love the set up. I usually keep it on 2X for brush busting, will set it on 4X for longer shots.

I am currently using a Leupold M8 2.5X Compact on my 1895G Guide Gun.  It is phenominal, and perfect for the gun and caliber.  I would highly suggest taking a hard look at the 1-4X or the 2.5X Leupolds with the 20mm objectives.  Contrary to popular belief, the 20mm objective gathers a whole lot of light, primarily from the comparitavely low power and good glass that Leupold uses.  Don't skimp on the mounts.  Warne, Talley, and Leupold are the best IMHO.

got a williams peep and a fire sight front on the .444 and a brockman peep and front blade on the .4570 and prefer the brockman set up.

At the deer camp earlier this month, two hunters have red dot sights on their Marlin 336s and they think the red dots are the greatest.  Anyone else has experence with red dots?

I have a scout scope mount on my 450 and use a burris handgun scope with quick release. Both eyes open, easy to acquire the target, lots of eye relief.  I also have a Williams peep for when the scope comes off.  It works well for me.

Sure-Shot,

What did you use to mount the scope?  I put the scout setup on my NEF Handi Rifle using the Burris base and mount, but am not exactly thrilled with it.
