45 APC & CCI Primers
« on: November 21, 2003, 09:55:09 AM »
Been trying to reload some 45 APC I had a box of CCI Large Pistol primers. I use an RCBS press and for some reason the CCI primers won't seat deep enough in the case. When I look at a factory load and one of the cases it looks as if the CCI Primer is just a little biger. I called RCBS and told them they said awhile back they heard the same thing about the Large Pistol Primer from CCI. I've never had trouble with any of their other primers for 44mag or 38special. Is it just me or this happen to anybody other then me? I called CCI and so far just could leave a message and as of yet no one has got bck to me

Sounds like one of two problems.  First, you really have large rifle primers.  They could be mismarked but sometimes we get careless and misread the label.  I have mistakenly loaded LR primers in pistol cases before so I can attest to that.  Also it could be the primer pockets are crimped and the primers flatten out a little as you try to seat them, they then won't go all the way in and give the appearence of being over size.  Check and see if they are military cases.  If not then that isn't the problem.  Haven't ever heard of over size LP primers from CCI before but all is possible.

After checking what LMG suggested try seating some in different brass to see if you have the same problem. I once had some ACP brass (don't remember the brand offhand) that had a large radius in the corners that prevented flush seating. The primer pocket cutter took care of that.

I've used thousands of the CCI 300's and have not had a problem. The problem is probably with the brass. Are you using S&B brass? The primer pocket is undersized. These are marginal cases for reloading, and I prefer to discard them as I encounter them.
