Is big-bores legal ??
« on: June 15, 2010, 06:56:56 AM »
Here lately I've had the itch to hunt squirrels with my 45 colt lever-action.  Of course it will be loaded very lightly with cast bullets but I'm not sure if its legal here in NC.  I know it sounds silly that I want to hunt small game with a 45 slug but I'm fond of my little trapper and would give me a excuse to work up a new load besides a hot load for deer.  And on top of that it is much more fun to shoot than a 22lr or a shotgun.  So how about it, is it legal in NC ?    Thanks, Dave

Don't worry even if it is legal I have a bit more sense than shooting squirrels in the tree-tops with a centerfire or rimfire, most other people do too.  Its usually the ones that bring a cooler to the woods with lunch and a six-pack of beer to wash it down that you gotta worry about.   Dave

Sure it's legal...I hunt squirrels with a .40 flintlock and have hunted them with a .45 and .54...On gamelands, you will need to read up on the regs, sometimes they restrict you to calibers used because of out of season deer hunters but on a person's own land, have at it...

btw...NC resident here...

I would check the DNR regulations. I would not take somebody else's word. Be sure! Here in Illinois it is legal to shoot squirell's on private land with a 30-06, coyotes  with a 7mm magnum, But not deer. Shotgun or muzzleloader only.
