Ruger No. 3 forearm question
« on: May 05, 2010, 08:41:09 AM »
I have a new to me .223 Remington Ruger No. 3 with No. 1 wood but the forearm is not the "Alexander Henry" design. Mine appears to be a semi Beavertail and does not have any checkering.

I would like to order a new No. 1 Alexander Henry style forearm but I am not sure which current No.1 model has the most similar barrel profile to my .223 Remington Ruger No. 3 barrel.

I believe it will be either the "light sporter" (forearm part # 70060) or the "medium sporter" (forearm part # 70059) but not sure which.

I read on either the Ruger forum or the Yahoo #1 group that the #3 has a different barrel contour than any #1 version.

I spent a pleasant evening once upon a time, with files and sandpaper, modifying a #3 shape to a #1A shape.  It now looks just like a #1A, but without checkering or groove.

My No3 looks nothing like yours.
My No3 has a different forend with a barrel band (looks like a 10/22)
My stock is a strait wristed number and NO checkering on the gun at all.

That is because mine has Ruger No. 1 wood (butt stock and forend) but does not have the fancy Alexander Henry forend.

The Alex Fore end is only on the S Models.
the B models have a forend similar to yours but checkered and the V models have a wide uncheckered beaver tail forend.
You may have a No 3 with a No1 V set of wood.
Sorry thought you thought it was the No 3 forend on yours.

k9jri's pictured forend looks almost exactly like a modified #3 I have.

The #1V is the same as the #1B and #1AB except for the barrel channel.

The #1A, #1S, and #1H have the Alex Henry forend, same except for the barrel channel.

This is a conversion from a regular forearm. Ruger wont sell a Alex henry forearm unless you send in the rifle.

I added another picture with the re-checkering and the octagonal barrel. This is on a 6.5x284 #1  26" barrel. This is a great rifle.

FWIW, there's plenty of "meat" in all the "other" Ruger #1 & #3  forends to rasp/etc one down to the AH length/profile.
I've done three different ones, myself - including a barrel-banded issue #3 forend -  but I had the luxury of a #! AH forend on hand, to hold next to the one I was working on as a model.

Then, of course, you may/may not want to have the altered FE checkered.

And Fred's correct - Ruger will not just ship out an AH forend.

I wish I could buy an "International" style fore end for my '06 #1 sporter.
Vote them all out, EVERY election!

K9jri, yours looks like a #3 forend that's been cut off just behind the barrel band.  The only way to get an Alex Henry from Ruger is send in an "a", "S" or tropical without a forend.  If you send in your #3 you'll get a forend with a barrel band.  I tried to find one or buy one from Ruger but they won't do it.  Finally I put a forend tip on mine and did some checkering.  I also have the #1 buttstock.  I want to put a barrel band front swivel on the barel but to do that I'll have to cut off the front sight to install it  then install a new one which will probably
require a new rear sight.

"K9jri, yours looks like a #3 forend that's been cut off just behind the barrel band."

That is possible but, if so, it was done by a real expert wood worker as there is no evidence that the wood has been reshaped.

"I want to put a barrel band front swivel on the barel but to do that I'll have to cut off the front sight to install it  then install a new one which will probably  require a new rear sight."

Several split, clamp on, mounted swivels are available that look quite good and would not require extensive barrel work.  I had one on my Anschutz Exemplar pistol that looked very appropriate.

No like an AH but it'll have to do until I can track one down.  This one is the barrel band model cut off, reshaped, etc.
