20 gauge slug gun
« on: May 08, 2010, 07:38:10 AM »
I've been wanting one for awhile and the other day I found one new in box for 160.00, so I bought it.  My question is in a pinch what would happen if I shot a shot round though it.  Say if Mr. bunny hops by.

It would most likely throw a doughnut shaped very open pattern. It won't hurt the gun but it wouldn't be very effective.

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

The shot is contained in the plastic cup until it leaves the barrel so it shouldn't hurt the rifling, but as markus said it probably wouldn't be very effective

I assume this is a tracker II barrel. Both a sabot and a wad are made of plastic so no danger of hurting the barrel. The spin imparted by the rifling will make a funny pattern as mentioned above. It would still lead to the demise of Mr. Bunny. In my state carrying a shot shell while deer hunting is frowned upon, but I sometimes find a stray one in my pocket. JamesIII

In N.Y. it's not only frowned upon, it's illegal. We can't even use buck shot on deer.

My son competes in defense shooting at his club and they use pistols, rifles & shotguns.  The shotgun phase uses both birdshot and slugs.  I let him use my old Mossberg 500 with a rifled barrel.  He shot trap loads out of it and it would NOT knock the targets at 30'.  My wife's smooth bore 20 ga with same brand of trap loads knocked the targets down just fine.  Confirms what previous posters said about quickly diluting the shot pattern.

as stated before it will shoot donuts i tryed to pattern my shotgun for turkey season and i can hit all the edges of the paper clean spot in the middle no bbs.  as for mr bunny it will probably hop off at a fast pace.
smooth bore for shot.  rifled for slugs.

and use brenneke ko smooth bore slugs.  they perform just as good as a rifled barrel
with slugs.  at least mine does....... ;D

I let my kid use my Beretta 303 with iron sights, 22 inch factory smooth bore slug barrel.  He aced all phases of shotgun shooting at the match today.  I tagged along and used the rifled barrel mossberg, great with the slugs and I got all the birdshot targets but I was shooting a bunch of old 12 ga., 3", 1 3/4 oz Turkey loads.
