H&R 45 Long Colt
« on: May 04, 2010, 05:55:57 PM »

I got the latest CDNN Sports catalog volume 2010-2 today. On page 71 they show an H&R Classic Carbine for $229.99. Further description says it is chambered for 45 Long Colt and has a 20" barrel. American Black Walnut straight grip. Checkered stock and forearm. They say these are closeout rifles.  PH. # 800-588-4898

ordered one the 3rd and received the 5th. neat looking. kind of reminds me of a kid's pop gun sizewise. not bad for less than $250.00 to my ffl's door.

Great price. How good is the sight picture on this?
Is knock down power on par to a 44mag, the pressure seems to be a bit lower. -g

Not even close with factory ammo. The 44 mag walks all over it.

Yeah, but reaming it to .454 or .460 sorta changes that picture ;) ;) ;).....but then again, reaming the.44 to .445 super changes it back somewhat.  It'll push a 300 gr. into the 2000 neighborhood.

Im not so shure, I have no scientific proof, but animals that Ive seen shot with the 45 drop just as quick, and are just as dead. its been my Idea that the larger bullit of the 45 makes up for the velosity of the 44mags .429 bullit. I have a black hawlk in 44mag and several colts [ and copys] in 45. I also have a win 94 trapper in 44mag and a marlin 94 in 45. A load in the upper range of either round works well on game. both work but for differant reasons.  DR

Velocity, jacket thickness, expanding properties of the design all play into it, but a bullet, even hard cast lead of .41 through .45 cal. put where the 'critter lives' is going to do it. It doesnt even have to be going all that fast to do it. Considering that most .30cal. hunting bullets dont expand to even what a .41-.45 starts out as, the bigger caliber is already there.

That's true for standard pressure factory ammo but when you start getting into the factory 45 Colt +P from companies like Buffalo Bore then things start to even back out. I can't remember if it was a thread here or somewhere else but somebody chronographed Buffalo Bore 325 grain heavy 45 Colt +P through a 20" Handi and it was running 1740 fps. That's almost 2200 ft-lbs. of muzzle energy so the 45 Colt does have some good factory options as long as you have a strong action gun like  Handi or a T/C.

I'm fond of both the 45 LC and 44 mag, When in the hands of a reloader with a strong action the 45 Colt will hold its own with a larger slug. Of course the 44 mag has been holding its own with factory loads for a long time and making hunters happy. But all things considered the 45 colt was designed for a large charge of black powder to make it capable of knocking down a cavalry horse in 1873 . Which is one of the main reasons the majority of factory loads are on the soft side.

Would I feel under gunned with either in their high end load offerings ? Nope, Not at all.

I have wanted one of the BC 45 colts for a while and that price is great , And would sure give a hand loader a fair chance to make up their own mind on what the 45 colt is really capable of ;)
