Owl Burgers Anyone?
« on: May 01, 2010, 10:38:54 AM »
Shot this guy in the woods the other night, with my camera.
Sitting on my patio with cup of coffee, I was looking at my 200yd backstop for Whistlepigs that are living in it and this guy was standing on the edge. 10x40 binocs and old eyes thought it was a groundhog standing, but didn't look right. It moved into the woods and I got on the four-wheeler and flew out there. The Beagle was already back there and came to see if I needed help. I looked in the woods but didn't see it at first. Then spotted it standing on the ground. Stella was within five feet of it and it stood still and I called her QUICK! She never saw it, Luckily. I went back to the house and made my wife come look at it. Then took her to the house and got my camera and went back. He let me take about fifteen pictures of him. He kept winking at me ;) I tried to catch it but when I pushed the button it was always a little late. I took them up and hooked up to the TV and showed my wife. Went back out and couldn't find him. There was a Red Tail up above in the tree the last time and it flew away when it saw me. My wife was teaching her kids about Owls that day in school. I thought it was a youngin but a guy told me not. He hasn't seen the pics yet. I don't know if it was trying to get baby Woodchucks, Sick, or what. The hill behind him is where the GH holes are. It was odd and neat as I was within four feet taking his picture and moving around him 8) Thought he might grab my face as close as I was ;D :o

Dang it sucks getting old. I thought I was posting this in the Indiana section ::)

Any Owl experts out there know if this was a young one or just a small one. Looked like down feathers on it like a young one. What kind is it? Thanks!

I have a pair nesting in a tree behind the barn. That one looks like the young ones we have now.The parents don't have down on them. When i first saw these, they were just gray down with piercing eyes. Now they're out and about too.I'm no expert, but my vote is young of the year.Slow

It appears to be an imature Great horned owl.
